Almost three hours of basketball against a Big Ten opponent is just what Wichita State needed with its exhibition opener three days away.
Â
"Nothing really surprised me," Wichita State coach
Gregg Marshall said. "Now I'm going to be able to break this film down, against another team, and show them the things we've been deficient in and how they can improve."
Â
Nebraska and Wichita State practiced on Saturday at the Aetna Multi-Purpose Center in a closed scrimmage meant to give both teams a look at a new opponent and lessons with officials and a clock. The teams started by alternating possessions. They worked against full-court and zone defenses before finishing with a 40-minute scrimmage, won by Wichita State 89-75.
Â
Wichita State junior forward
Trey Wade showed off a variety of skills, just as Marshall has seen in practices. Wade, a 6-foot-6 transfer from South Plains (Texas) College scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 17 minutes. He made 6 of 10 shots and all six of his free throws.
Â
"
Trey Wade does a lot of things well," Marshall said. "He rebounds. He can score inside. He can hit the occasional three. He can defend."
Â
Guard
Erik Stevenson added 17 points and made 4 of 10 threes, including back-to-back ones late in the scrimmage to help stretch Wichita State's lead.
Dexter Dennis scored 12 points. Freshmen guards
Tyson Etienne and
Grant Sherfield both handed out four assists with one turnover. Etienne also scored eight points and grabbed four steals. Sophomore guard
Jamarius Burton scored 10 points and had seven rebounds.
Â
The Shockers grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, with Wade recording four. They made 9 of 26 three-pointers and 12 of 14 foul shots.Â
Wichita State put together several sequences that helped them build their lead.
Â
Late in the first half of the scrimmage, Burton drove into the lane and passed to
DeAntoni Gordon, who passed to Sherfield for an open three-pointer. Minutes later, Stevenson pushed the ball in transition to find Etienne for a three-pointer.
Â
In the second half, center Asbjorn Midtgaard found Wade cutting to the basket for a layup. Late in the scrimmage,
Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler hustled to get good position in the lane and scored off a pass from Sherfield on a break. Poor Bear-Chandler followed that effort with an offensive rebound and basket.Â
Â
After the scrimmage, official Don Daily spoke to the Shockers about rule changes and points of emphasis.
