Conference Play Continues at ECU Wednesday Night

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State continues its road trip to begin conference play with a visit to Greenville, N.C., to face the ECU Pirates on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ET tip.

On The Air

Wednesday's game can be heard on the radio at KNSS 98.7 FM/1330 AM with the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball Steve Strain calling the action. Strain begins his fifth season broadcasting games for the women's program. The game will also be streamed at ECUPirates.com/Watch.
 

Win No. 300
Wichita State head coach Keitha Adams collected her 300th career win at the Division I level in the Shockers' overtime win vs. Missouri State on Nov. 10. She compiled 284 wins in her 16 seasons at UTEP and has accumulated 21 in her first two seasons at Wichita State. She has a career record of 305-233.

Tulsa Review
Wichita State dropped its conference opener for the second straight season to Tulsa... The Shockers are now 16-3 all-time vs. the Golden Hurricane... Wichita State allowed 19 offensive rebounds - the second most this season... WSU lost the rebounding battle for the seventh time this season... Jaida Hampton scored a season-high 18 points for her team-leading seventh double-figure game... Hampton has scored 10 or more points in five of her last six games... Ashley Reid registered all 10 of her season-high points after halftime... Tulsa had two players record double-doubles.

Youngsters
Wichita State's roster consists of eight true freshmen, one redshirt freshman, one sophomore, two juniors, one redshirt junior and two seniors. All told, the average age of the 2018-19 Shockers is just 19.2 years, making them the fifth youngest team in the country.

The Series vs. ECU
Wichita State and ECU have met just one time prior to Wednesday night's matchup. The first meeting came last year in Wichita State's first season as members of the American Athletic Conference.

Last Meeting
Wichita State dropped the lone meeting between the two programs last season in Greenville, 67-77. The loss snapped the Shockers' season-best five game winning streak. WSU led by as many as 16 in the game before being outscored 30-9 in the fourth quarter. Rangie Bessard scored a game-high 22 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage collected a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go with a pair of blocks and steals as well.

Scouting the Pirates

ECU is 9-5 with wins against UMES, Monmouth, Grand Canyon, Kennesaw State, Wake Forest, Liberty, Upstate, Longwood and South Carolina State and losses to William & Mary, Charlotte, Duke, UNCW and Tulane. Raven Johnson leads the Pirates in scoring (13.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.4 rpg), while Lashonda Monk paces ECU in assists (47) and steals (51) to go with 12.0 points. Monk ranks eighth nationally with her 51 steals. As a team, ECU ranks 5th in both turnovers forced and turnover margin and 13th in steals.



Hot Hand Hampton
Freshman guard Jaida Hampton has found her groove on the offensive end over her last six games. The Lansing, Mich., native has tallied 10 or more points in five of those six games. Hampton has set a new season high in each of the last three games, highlighted by an 18-point performance in the conference opener at Tulsa. Against Tulsa, Hampton was 7-for-11 from the field and was responsible for 10 of the team's 11 points in the first quarter. She is averaging 12.7 points per game during this six-game stretch on 49.1 percent shooting.

Hampton Named to All-Tournament Team
Freshman guard Jaida Hampton was named to the Desert Division All-Tournament Team at the Duel in the Desert (Dec. 19-20). The Lansing, Mich., native scored a team-high and season-high tying 14 points in the Shockers' loss to Washington State on Dec. 20. Hampton finished 4-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line (season highs), while dishing four assists and pulling down three rebounds. She has led Wichita State in scoring four times and has five games of 10 or more points near the midway point of the season.

Smith Named Freshman of the Week
Freshman forward Shyia Smith was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the week on Dec. 17. The Idabel, Okla., native led the Shockers to their lone win of the week on Dec. 11 against Grambling State - the annual Kids Day Game. WSU defeated the Tigers, 70-61, behind Smith's team-high 15 points (9-of-11 from the free throw line) and eight rebounds. She new season highs in rebounds (8), free throws made (9) and attempted (11). It is the first Freshman of the Week honor for Wichita State since becoming a member of The American last year.

ADN to Carry 15 Women's Basketball Contests
The American Digital Network (ADN) will produce 15 live women's basketball contests during the 2019 conference schedule, featuring 11 of the league's teams. All games will be available on Facebook on the conference's live event page, The American Digital Network Plus (facebook.com/AmericanDigitalNetworkPlus). Lincoln Rose and Angela Beck will return for their second season as the on-air talent for all 15 contests. The ADN will be in Tulsa for the first day of conference play, as the Golden Hurricane hosts Wichita State at the Reynolds Center. Every following week will then feature two ADN broadcasts until the end of February.


Home Sweet Home
Wichita State will play 18 games in front of its home crowd in 2018-19, marking the most home games in a single season. The Shockers have never played more than 17 games in a season on their own floor. Wichita State played 17 home contests in both 2008-09 and 2006-07 seasons.
