Conference Action Begins at Tulsa Friday Night

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State opens the New Year with a trip to Tulsa to face the Golden Hurricane in the American Athletic Conference opener on Friday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m.

On The Air

Friday's game can be heard on the radio at KNSS 98.7 FM/1330 AM with the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball Steve Strain calling the action. Strain begins his fifth season broadcasting games for the women's program. The game can also be seen on the American Digital Network with Lincoln Rose and Angela Beck on the call.
 

Win No. 300
Wichita State head coach Keitha Adams collected her 300th career win at the Division I level in the Shockers' overtime win vs. Missouri State on Nov. 10. She compiled 284 wins in her 16 seasons at UTEP and has accumulated 21 in her first two seasons at Wichita State. She has a career record of 305-232.

Savannah State Review
Wichita State snapped a two-game losing streak with a 16-point win over Savannah State on Sunday... The Shockers set a season high with 14 steals, while also forcing 26 turnovers... WSU's 15 assists tied a season high... Freshman Jaida Hampton recorded a team and new career high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc... Carla Bremaud added 13 points and a career-high six rebounds... Seraphine Bastin scored 11 to go with five assists, four boards and three steals... Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage pulled down 10 rebounds.

Youngsters
Wichita State's roster consists of eight true freshmen, one redshirt freshman, one sophomore, two juniors, one redshirt junior and two seniors. All told, the average age of the 2018-19 Shockers is just 19.2 years, making them the fifth youngest team in the country.

The Series vs. Tulsa
Wichita State and Tulsa have met 18 times dating all the way back to March 2, 1978. The two programs went 17 years before facing each other after the Shockers joined The American a season ago.

Last Meeting
Wichita State avenged an early season home loss to the Golden Hurricane with a 70-59 road win on Feb. 26, 2018. Four Shockers reached double-figures led by Diamond Lockhart's 16 points in the final conference game of the season. Rangie Bessard and Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage both recorded double-doubles with 15 points and 11 rebounds and 12 points and 11 rebounds, respectively. Angiee Tompkins added 14 points and eight boards.

Scouting the Golden Hurricane

Tulsa is 6-7 to open the 2018-19 campaign after wins against Stetson, Oral Roberts, Saint Louis, Abilene Christian, Alabama and UTEP and losses to American, Belmont, Stephen F. Austin, Arizona St, Arkansas St, Little Rock and Arkansas. Crystal Polk leads the Golden Hurricane in scoring (13.5) and rebounding (7.1), while Alexis Gaulden averages a team-best 4.3 assists a contest. Morgan Brady ranks 15th nationally and first in The American in 3-point field goal percentage at 49 percent.



Welcome Back Cez
Senior guard Cesaria Ambrosio made her season debut Saturday, Dec. 8 vs. Creighton after missing the first eight games of the season due to a back injury. The Fully, Switzerland, native finished with five points and three assists in 21 minutes off the bench.

Hampton Named to All-Tournament Team
Freshman guard Jaida Hampton was named to the Desert Division All-Tournament Team at the Duel in the Desert (Dec. 19-20). The Lansing, Mich., native scored a team-high and season-high tying 14 points in the Shockers' loss to Washington State on Dec. 20. Hampton finished 4-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line (season highs), while dishing four assists and pulling down three rebounds. She has led Wichita State in scoring four times and has five games of 10 or more points near the midway point of the season.

Smith Named Freshman of the Week
Freshman forward Shyia Smith was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the week on Dec. 17. The Idabel, Okla., native led the Shockers to their lone win of the week on Dec. 11 against Grambling State - the annual Kids Day Game. WSU defeated the Tigers, 70-61, behind Smith's team-high 15 points (9-of-11 from the free throw line) and eight rebounds. She new season highs in rebounds (8), free throws made (9) and attempted (11). It is the first Freshman of the Week honor for Wichita State since becoming a member of The American last year.

ADN to Carry 15 Women's Basketball Contests
The American Digital Network (ADN) will produce 15 live women's basketball contests during the 2019 conference schedule, featuring 11 of the league's teams. All games will be available on Facebook on the conference's live event page, The American Digital Network Plus (facebook.com/AmericanDigitalNetworkPlus). Lincoln Rose and Angela Beck will return for their second season as the on-air talent for all 15 contests. The ADN will be in Tulsa for the first day of conference play, as the Golden Hurricane hosts Wichita State at the Reynolds Center. Every following week will then feature two ADN broadcasts until the end of February.


Home Sweet Home
Wichita State will play 18 games in front of its home crowd in 2018-19, marking the most home games in a single season. The Shockers have never played more than 17 games in a season on their own floor. Wichita State played 17 home contests in both 2008-09 and 2006-07 seasons.
