WICHITA, Kan. - Coming off its first ever NCAA Regional Final last season, the Wichita State softball team began its fall season with a 19-1 win over Avila at Wilkins Stadium on Saturday.
Six Shockers collected two or more hits, with junior
Madison Perrigan hitting the first home run since the new outfield fence was installed in the bottom of the 10th inning. Sophomore
Neleigh Herring added five RBI while
Caitlin Bingham,
Hailey Martinez, and
Erin McDonald combined for nine strikeouts on the mound.
Perrigan drove in the game's first run with a single to first base, with Herring following that up with a three-run double to left field. Junior
Ryleigh Buck scored on an error in the bottom of the second inning before the Shockers were able to put up seven runs in the bottom of the third.
Herring's double to center field allowed senior
Laurie Derrico to score and sophomore
Wylie Glover added a two-run single. Senior
Bailey Lange added to the Wichita State lead with a double to center field that brought in Glover from first. Buck followed up with a double that drove Lange in from second base.
A double from sophomore McKenzie Webber brought in two more runs for the Shockers in the bottom of the sixth, with Lange adding to the lead with an RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the seventh. In her first collegiate game as a Shocker, freshman
Adeline Reese answered the bell with a triple to center field that scored Weber from second base and extended the Shocker lead 16-0.
Herring managed to obtain her fifth RBI of the game with a double to left center field that scored Buck from second before Perrigan capped the bottom of the 10th off with her home run.
Wichita State continues their fall campaign on Sunday with Crowder College at Wilkins Stadium at 1 p.m.
