Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Shockers Oust No. 44 Oklahoma, 5-2

NORMAN, Okla. - The Wichita State women's tennis team ousted No. 44 Oklahoma, 5-2, Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

The win marks just the sixth time the Shockers have beaten Oklahoma in 39 meetings.

HEAD COACH COLIN FOSTER
"It was really a complete team performance in both matches this weekend. After the disappointing performance at Tulsa, this team…both players and coaches; individually and as a whole, did dome serious soul searching and had some uncomfortable conversations. I feel we have really emerged as a stronger, closer, more resilient group. Even on Friday (against No. 13 Oklahoma State) in defeat, we were playing with belief and great energy and that carried into today. I told the group that certainly doesn't guarantee victory and we obviously came up short on a few courts today…but it will give us the best chance to have team success, and to really enjoy the success the rest of the season and beyond.'

DOUBLES
Lily Miyazaki and Malene Stripp put Oklahoma on the board first, dropping Ting-Ya Hsu and Giulia Guidetti of Wichita State 6-1 on court two. The Shockers answered with wins in the first and third flights to clinch the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead on the Sooners. Sophomores Marta Bellucco and Fatima Bizhukova won in the top flight 6-2, taking down Jasmine Asghar and Christiana Brigante. Gabriela Porubin and Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva teamed up in doubles action, and won 6-3 over Camila Romero and Simran Kaur Sethi.

SINGLES
Oklahoma tied the match early in singles action, where Stripp dropped Lazarova on court six, 6-1, 6-0. Junior Sandra Honigova improved to 15-3 on the season, taking down Asghar in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) to give WSU the 2-1 lead. Bizhukova, who ranks 68th in latest ITA/Oracle Singles Rankings, drubbed No. 28 ranked Miyazaki 6-2, 6-3, pushing the lead to 3-1. Bellucco fell in flight four to Romero in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 to get Oklahoma within one.

Senior Guilia Guidetti battled on court three, and rallied to win the last two sets and clinch the match for the Shockers. After falling 6-3 in the first, Guidetti bounced back to win the final two sets 6-0, 6-4. Porubin made the final score 5-2, with a three-set victory (6-4, 1-6, 6-3) over Kaur Sethi.
