Shockers Set to Host Nebraska, New Mexico

WICHITA, Kan -- Wichita State welcomes Nebraska to Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex Friday at 3 p.m. followed by a match with New Mexico on Sunday, March 11 at 12 p.m. in Wichita.
 
SHOCKER SUMMARY
Wichita State is 6-6 to start the 2018 season under second-year head coach Danny Bryan. After starting the season 1-5, the Shockers have reeled off five of their last six. The Shockers have wins against Buffalo (5-2), which came in their season opener on the road and UMKC (7-0), Tulsa (4-3), San Francisco (4-0), No. 46 New Mexico (4-1) and Grand Canyon (4-2). Cornell (6-1), Utah (5-2), Auburn (4-3), Arkansas (4-3)  Middle Tennessee State (5-2), and No. 15 Oklahoma (4-1) are among the Shocker losses. Senior co-captain Miroslav Herzan leads the charge for the Shockers, compiling a 8-3 record in singles action, in the fourth, fifth and sixth flights. Elsewhere, junior Haru Inoue has won two of his last three, including No. 103 ranked Ricky Hernandez-Tong to move to 5-5 in first and second flight. Sophomore Murkel Dellien has paced the Shockers in the second and third flights, compiling an 7-4 record including seven of his last eight. In doubles, the tandem of Dellien and Marius Frosa are off to a 6-2 start in the top flight, while Caligiana and Herzan are 5-4 in second and third flights along with Inoue and Stoica at 4-4.
 
BACK-TO-BACK
The Shockers won three matches on March 3-4 to repeat as Mountain Pacific Tournament Champions in Albuquerque, N.M. Wichita State dropped San Francisco (4-0), No. 46 New Mexico (4-1) and Grand Canyon (4-2). Against San Francisco, the Shockers pulled off victories flights three through six to clinch the match, while the first two flights went unfinished. Haru Inoue led the charge against New Mexico, knocking off his first ranked opponent of the season, along with wins by Dellien, Herzan, and Stoica. In the championship, Grand Canyon tested the Shockers before pulling out the victory and the second-straight tournament championship.
 
THAT'S HISTORY
At the Mountain Pacific Tournament on March 3-4, the Shockers met up with Grand Canyon and San Francisco for the first time in school history. Wichita State faced New Mexico for the 11th time, and the first since 2009 when the Lobos defeated Wichita State 6-1 in Albuquerque. The win marks the first over New Mexico since April 2, 1989, with WSU winning 6-3 in Wichita.
 
The Shockers and Golden Hurricane met on the court for the 37th time in school history on Feb. 19 where WSU knocked off Tulsa (4-3) for the first time since Nov. 4, 1994, and the first in the last 14 tries. Besides former Missouri Valley opponents Drake (16-27), Illinois State (30-10), Southern Illinois (36-9), the Tulsa-WSU Series is the largest with 37 combined matches. The Shockers hold a 21-16 lead over the Golden Hurricane.
 
HISTORY WITH NEBRASKA
Last Meeting - the two last met on Mar. 18, 2017, with Nebraska defeating Wichita State 5-2 in Lincoln.
Overall - Nebraska leads the overall series 20-10. Wichita State is 7-8 at home, 2-12 away, and 1-0 in neutral locations against Nebraska.
Last win - The last time Wichita State defeated Nebraska was on Feb. 12, 2016 (4-3) in Wichita.
 
SCOUTING NEBRASKA
Nebraska is off to a hot start to being the 2018 season, coming in with a 9-1 record and winners of three-straight. The Huskers are coming off two victories last weekend over Denver (4-3) and Northern Illinois (4-1). Toby Boyer leads the charge for the Huskers with a 6-0 record, primarily in the first flight. Two other Huskers, William Grattan Smith (6-0) and Linus Erhart, are unbeaten in dual play. In doubles, Nebraska has tallied only five total losses, while Boyer and Erhart possess a 6-2 record in flight one.
 
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO
New Mexico comes into the match 7-5 on the season. The Shockers and then No. 46 New Mexico met up last weekend at the Mountain Pacific Invite, where the Shockers reeled off a 4-1 victory over the Lobos. Wichita State leads the overall series with New Mexico 6-5. They are 1-1 at home, 4-4 away and 1-0 at neutral locations against the Lobos.  
 
POWER RANKING
Shocker duo Marius Frosa and Murkel Dellien return to the ITA/Oracle Doubles Rankings (Mar. 6), coming in at No. 76. The pair begins the dual season 6-2, with wins over Utah, Auburn, Arkansas, Tulsa, Buffalo and Oklahoma. Their lone loss came to the duo of Chris Edge and Tom Moonen of Middle Tennessee State, who ranked No. 48 at the time. The duo ranked No. 27 in the Nov. 15 ITA polls.
 
SENIOR POWER
Senior Miroslav Herzan is off to a hot start in dual season. Herzan begins the season 8-3 in singles action. His two losses came by way of Pedro Alonso of Arkansas ,Lucca Baptista of Tulsa and Gregoire Balenci of Grand Canyon. He's competed in the sixth, fifth and fourth flight.
 
CAPTAINS
Head coach Danny Bryan announced the captains for the 2018 season. The captains include Herzan and juniors Haru Inoue and Eddie Stoica.
 
NEW FACE ON THE COURT
Freshman Andrea Trapani joined the Shockers in January, and looks to record his first victory in a Shocker uniform after a 0-5 start to the spring season. Trapani hails from Palermo, Italy and had a 13.22 Universal Tennis Rating coming to Wichita State. He ranked as high as #232 in ITF Junior World Rankings, with over 30 combined singles and doubles wins.
 
FALL BALL
Frosa, from Romania, led the Shockers in the fall season. Frosa went 8-4 in the fall in singles action, including a run to the main draw of the ITA All-Americans, knocking off No. 83 Felix Corwin of Minnesota along the way. The junior was one win away from making the final four of the ITA Central Regional. Inoue, who ranked No. 58 in Fall Rankings, went 10-4 in singles competing in three Futures events. He advanced to the main draw in two of the three events. In doubles, junior Andrea Caligiana and Herzan went 5-2, including a semifinal berth at the ITA Central Regional. Stoica and Frosa went 3-1, including an upset over No. 25 Hammond/Cash of Oklahoma State.
 
UP NEXT:
After the two matches at home this weekend, the Shockers return home next Sunday, Mar. 18 to take on Darmouth at 12 p.m. at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
