Non-Conference Play Wraps Up vs. Savannah State

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State returns to action following a 10-day break in between games to host Savannah State Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Charles Koch Arena.

New Tip Times
This season the Shockers will tip 30 minutes earlier on weeknights and select weekend games. Contests will now start at 6:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. like in seasons past.

Sunday's game can be heard online at GoShockers.com/listen with the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball Steve Strain calling the action. Strain begins his fifth season broadcasting games for the women's program. The game can also be seen locally on COX YurView (HD 2022) and online at YurView.com/Kansas.
 

Win No. 300
Wichita State head coach Keitha Adams collected her 300th career win at the Division I level in the Shockers' overtime win vs. Missouri State on Nov. 10. She compiled 284 wins in her 16 seasons at UTEP and has accumulated 18 in her first two seasons at Wichita State. She has a career record of 304-232.

Duel in the Desert Review
WSU went 0-2 in the Desert Division of the Duel in the Desert held at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Dec. 19-20. The Shockers fell to Northwestern (43-65) and Washington State (59-85). In the tournament opener, Alyssia Faye scored a team-high 11 points, while Carla Bremaud and Shyia Smith added nine points each. Against Washington State, Jaida Hampton led with 14 points and Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage added 11 points and nine boards. Hampton was named to the All-Tournament Team after her play against the Cougars.

Youngsters
Wichita State's roster consists of eight true freshmen, one redshirt freshman, one sophomore, two juniors, one redshirt junior and two seniors. All told, the average age of the 2018-19 Shockers is just 19.2 years, making them the fifth youngest team in the country.

The Series vs. Savannah State
Wichita State and Savannah State have met just once prior to Sunday's meeting with the Shockers owning a 1-0 advantage.

Last Meeting
Wichita State welcomed Savannah State to Charles Koch Arena on Dec. 10, 2010. WSU downed the Tigers 67-41 in front of 9,831 fans - the 4th most in program history. The game was WSU's annual Schoolhouse Rocks with the Shocks Kids Game. Three Shockers finished the game with 10 points and WSU shot nearly 50 percent from the field in the second half to run away with the victory.

Scouting the Tigers

Savannah State is 2-6 to open the 2018-19 campaign after wins against Wesleyan College and Carver College and losses to Georgia Southern, Jacksonville, DePaul, Texas Southern, Ole Miss and South Dakota State. Myasia Jones averages a team-leading 21.8 points per game, while Jacquece Alston leads SSU in assists and steals. Alston ranks fifth nationally in steals per game (4.25) and has also logged a triple-double this season. The Tigers lead the nation in steals per game and also rank 3rd in turnovers forced, 4th in offensive rebounds and 7th in blocks. Head Coach Cedric Baker enters his 15th season with Savannah State and a career record of 161-288.



Welcome Back Cez
Senior guard Cesaria Ambrosio made her season debut Saturday, Dec. 8 vs. Creighton after missing the first eight games of the season due to a back injury. The Fully, Switzerland, native finished with five points and three assists in 21 minutes off the bench.

Hampton Named to All-Tournament Team
Freshman guard Jaida Hampton was named to the Desert Division All-Tournament Team at the Duel in the Desert (Dec. 19-20). The Lansing, Mich., native scored a team-high and season-high tying 14 points in the Shockers' loss to Washington State on Dec. 20. Hampton finished 4-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line (season highs), while dishing four assists and pulling down three rebounds. She has led Wichita State in scoring four times and has five games of 10 or more points near the midway point of the season.

Smith Named Freshman of the Week
Freshman forward Shyia Smith was named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the week on Dec. 17. The Idabel, Okla., native led the Shockers to their lone win of the week on Dec. 11 against Grambling State - the annual Kids Day Game. WSU defeated the Tigers, 70-61, behind Smith's team-high 15 points (9-of-11 from the free throw line) and eight rebounds. She new season highs in rebounds (8), free throws made (9) and attempted (11). It is the first Freshman of the Week honor for Wichita State since becoming a member of The American last year.

ADN to Carry 15 Women's Basketball Contests
The American Digital Network (ADN) will produce 15 live women's basketball contests during the 2019 conference schedule, featuring 11 of the league's teams. All games will be available on Facebook on the conference's live event page, The American Digital Network Plus (facebook.com/AmericanDigitalNetworkPlus). Lincoln Rose and Angela Beck will return for their second season as the on-air talent for all 15 contests. The ADN will be in Tulsa for the first day of conference play, as the Golden Hurricane hosts Wichita State at the Reynolds Center. Every following week will then feature two ADN broadcasts until the end of February.


Home Sweet Home
Wichita State will play 18 games in front of its home crowd in 2018-19, marking the most home games in a single season. The Shockers have never played more than 17 games in a season on their own floor. Wichita State played 17 home contests in both 2008-09 and 2006-07 seasons.

Wichita State opens American Athletic Conference play with back-to-back road trips to Tulsa and ECU. The Shockers travel south to Tulsa on Friday, Jan. 4 for a 7 p.m. tip and then head east to ECU on Jan. 9.
