Shockers Take Winning Streak to South Dakota

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State has its first road contest of the season in a matchup with South Dakota Wednesday night in Sioux Falls, S.D., at the Sanford Pentagon.

New Tip Times
This season the Shockers will tip 30 minutes earlier on weeknights and select weekend games. Contests will now start at 6:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. like in seasons past.

On The Air
Wednesday's game can be heard on the radio at KNSS 98.7 FM/1330 AM with the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball Steve Strain calling the action. Strain begins his fifth season broadcasting games for the women's program. The game can also be seen online through ESPN+ or at ESPN.com/Watch.

 

Win No. 300
Wichita State head coach Keitha Adams collected her 300th career win at the Division I level in the Shockers' overtime win vs. Missouri State on Nov. 10. She compiled 284 wins in her 16 seasons at UTEP and has accumulated 18 in her first two seasons at Wichita State. She has a career record of 302-226.

Home Openers
Wichita State opened its home slate vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff for the 2018-19 season on Wednesday, Nov. 7. The Shockers are 29-16 all-time in home openers after defeating UAPB, 76-39. Wichita State has won six of its last eight home openers. The Shockers started the game on a 14-0 run and never looked back in the 37-point win. Senior Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage scored a career-high 21 points in only 17 minutes. She outscored the whole UAPB team in the first half, 19-14.

Youngsters
Wichita State's roster consists of eight true freshmen, one redshirt freshman, one sophomore, two juniors, one redshirt junior and two seniors. All told, the average age of the 2018-19 Shockers is just 19.2 years, making them the fifth youngest team in the country.

The Series vs. South Dakota
Wichita State and South Dakota have met on the hardwood five times dating all the way back to the first meeting on Nov. 27, 1981. South Dakota has won the last two meetings after the Shockers recorded the first three in the series. Wichita State is 0-1 all-time vs. South Dakota on the road, but 2-0 in nuetral site contests.

Last Meeting
South Dakota spoiled the Shockers' home opener a season ago in a 62-48 win for the Coyotes on Nov. 18, 2017. Senior Rangie Bessard registered her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 boards, as the only Shocker to reach double-figures. Wichita State connected on only 2-of-18 attempts from beyond the arc and shot just 35.6 percent overall. WSU forced 20 turnovers, but USD hit 46.7 percent of its attempts to pull out the victory.

Scouting the Coyotes
Located in Vermillion, S.D., the University of South Dakota has an enrollment of 10,261 as a member of the Summit League. South Dakota returns nine letterwinners, including three starters off last year's squad that finished 29-7 and 14-0 in the Summit. The Coyotes fell in the quarterfinals of the WNIT to TCU. Junior guard Ciara Duffy (12.3 ppg) led the team in scoring a season ago and is back along with senior Allison Arens (11.5 ppg) and junior Madison McKeever (8.6 ppg). Head Coach Dawn Plitzuweit enters her third season with South Dakota. She has a career record of 243-110 in her first 12 seasons as a collegiate head coach.




Undefeated Start 
The Shockers are 4-0 to open the season for the first time since 1996-97. Wichita State will look to make it 5-0 on Wednesday at South Dakota. No Shocker team has started 5-0 since that same 1996-97 squad. Wichita State has defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff (76-39), Missouri State (63-60), Sam Houston State (63-55) and Houston Baptist, while holding the three opponents to a combined 29.5 percent shooting from the field. The defense has been even better guarding the three-point line. UAPB, Missouri State and SHSU combined to shoot 18-for-80 from beyond the arc, good for an 22.5 percent clip.


Double-Double
Through the first three games of the season Wichita State freshman forward Trajata Colbert had played a total of 14 minutes with one DNP, but when her number was called Saturday vs. Houston Baptist, the Rochelle, Ga., native responded. Colbert played 13 minutes and collected her first career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds - 7 of them offensive. Her rebounding exhibition helped WSU outrebound HBU by 23, while the team's 21 offensive rebounds marked a season best.

Five More Minutes
Wichita State needed overtime to take down Missouri State on Nov. 10, marking the first overtime game for the Shockers since defeating Loyola (65-62) on Feb. 14, 2016 in Charles Koch Arena. Wichita State is 18-20 all-time in overtime contests, including a 9-8 mark at home. It is the seventh November overtime game in program history, four of those wins.


Home Sweet Home
Wichita State will play 18 games in front of its home crowd in 2018-19, marking the most home games in a single season. The Shockers have never played more than 17 games in a season on their own floor. Wichita State played 17 home contests in both 2008-09 and 2006-07 seasons.
