Shockers Seek First 3-0 Start Since 2002-03

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State continues its home stretch with a Wednesday night meeting vs. Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m. in Charles Koch Arena.

New Tip Times
This season the Shockers will tip 30 minutes earlier on weeknights and select weekend games. Contests will now start at 6:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. like in seasons past.

Wednesday's game can be heard online at GoShockers.com/listen with the voice of Shocker Women's Basketball Steve Strain calling the action. Win No. 300
Wichita State head coach Keitha Adams collected her 300th career win at the Division I level in Saturday's overtime win vs. Missouri State. She compiled 284 wins in her 16 seasons at UTEP and has accumulated 14 in her first at Wichita State. She has a career record of 300-226.

Home Openers
Wichita State opened its home slate vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff for the 2018-19 season last Wednesday night. The Shockers are 29-16 all-time in home openers after defeating UAPB, 76-39. Wichita State has won six of its last eight home openers. The Shockers started the game on a 14-0 run and never looked back in the 37-point win. Senior Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage scored a career-high 21 points in only 17 minutes. She outscored the whole UAPB team in the first half, 19-14.

Youngsters
Wichita State's roster consists of eight true freshmen, one redshirt freshman, one sophomore, two juniors, one redshirt junior and two seniors. All told, the average age of the 2018-19 Shockers is just 19.2 years, making them the fifth youngest team in the country.

The Series vs. Sam Houston State
Wichita State and Sam Houston State have met on the hardwood just three times dating all the way back to the first meeting on Nov. 27, 1991. The Shockers have won the last two matchups after Sam Houston State defeated Wichita State in the first-ever meeting. Wichita State is 1-1 all-time vs. Sam Houston State in Wichita.

Last Meeting 
Wichita State had four players score in double-figures en route to a 70-46 win on Dec. 28, 2014. Jamillah Bonner led the way for the Shockers with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Alie Decker and Michaela Dapprich added 14 points apiece. Jaleesa Chapel chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds of her own. The Shockers held the Bearkats to only 13 first half points on 19 percent shooting. For the game Wichita State limited Sam Houston State to a paltry 26.7 percent from the field. The defense also forced 27 Sam Houston State turnovers.

Scouting the Bearkats
Located in Huntsville, Texas, Sam Houston State University has an enrollment of 20,477 as a member of the Southland Conference. Sam Houston State returns seven letterwinners, including two starters off last year's squad that finished 4-23 and 1-17 in the Southland. The Bearkats are 1-1 so far in 2018-19 after a season-opening loss at LSU, 66-52 and 100-55 win vs. jarvis Christian. Jaylonn Walker leads three double-figure scorers at 12.5 points per game. Junior guard Jennifer Oramas returns to lead Sam Houston State. Oramas led the Bearkats in scoring a season ago at 10.0 points per game to go along with a team-best 83 assists. The Bearkats also bring back leading rebounder (7.4 rpg) and second leading scorer (9.3 ppg) Lydia Baxter. Eight newcomers join the team in 2018-19 with six of them transfers via the JUCO route. Head Coach Ravon Justice enters her first season with Sam Houston State. She has a career record of 29-35 in two seasons as a collegiate head coach. She comes to Sam Houston State after spending the last two years at Prairie View A&M.




2-0 Start
Wichita State has played two games in the 2018-19 season and collected two wins. The Shockers are 2-0 to open the season for the first time since 2005-06. Wichita State will look to make it 3-0 on Wednesday vs. Sam Houston State. No Shocker team has started 3-0 since the 2002-03 squad. Wichita State has defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff (76-39) and Missouri State (63-60), while holding the two opponents to a combined 28.5 percent shooting from the field. The defense has been even better guarding the three-point line. Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Missouri State combined to shoot 9-for-45 from beyond the arc, good for a 20 percent clip.


Raven's Double-Double
Redshirt junior Raven Prince recorded a double-double in just her second career game as a Shocker on Nov. 10 vs. Missouri State. The Oklahoma City native played 32 minutes off the bench and poured in 12 points and 12 rebounds to help the Shockers take down the Lady Bears in overtime. It marked the first double-double in the 2018-19 campaign for Wichita State.

Five More Minutes
Wichita State needed overtime to take down Missouri State on Nov. 10, marking the first overtime game for the Shockers since defeating Loyola (65-62) on Feb. 14, 2016 in Charles Koch Arena. Wichita State is 18-20 all-time in overtime contests, including a 9-8 mark at home. It is the seventh November overtime game in program history, four of those wins.
