Wichita State pitching coach Mike Steele on:

The performance by senior Clayton McGinness at Arkansas.

"He has been outstanding the entire fall. He's showed so much growth, maturity-wise, and now he's got stuff. Four innings against Arkansas. He gave up a two-run home run in the first and then went on and didn't give up any for three innings and punched out seven. Right now, he would be our Friday night starter."

Why the American Athletic Conference's geography can help recruiting and help exposure to scouts.

"You're able to go all over the country and be seen by Northeast scouts and a Northeast cross-checker. There's an evaluation. Then you're able to be seen by South scouts and Southeast scouts and Southeast cross-checkers. You have more information from more sources that can propel your guys to being put on the draft board and being picked. You're able to be seen by the whole group, basically, from Kansas over the East Coast. Everybody's going to be able to see you and they're going to get a pretty good look at you. Now, you've got to play well."

What he learned about the tradition of Wichita State baseball.

"You look at what this place is. This place was not built on perception. It was built on substance. There was a core of grit and a griminess and a tenacity that it was us against the world. Nobody's heard of us and we're going to create a dynasty for 25-30 years. Not built on these rankings or that ranking. They didn't care. They just wanted to go out and beat people. They wanted to work harder than everybody."

Why it is important to let pitchers struggle.

"I used to think like, that I'm going to go fix everybody's problems. And when I fix all their issues and I walk them along and I help them by not letting them taste failure, that I was being a good coach. All I really realized was that I was just protecting my ego."

Which Shockers wore the best Halloween costumes for the team's annual SCREAMage (12:30 p.m. Saturday).

Paxton Wallace's Bam Bam outfit last year, because it kind of just fits him. There's been some really good ones and I think it's a good time for those guys.
