Shockers Win Invitational with Two 4-3 Wins

9STOCKTON, Calif. - The Wichita State men's tennis team won the 2017 Pacific Mountain Invitational championship with two 4-3 victories on Sunday at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.

Wichita State (7-5) defeated No. 39 Cal Poly 4-3 in a 9 a.m. match after being postponed on Saturday, due to weather. In the top flight, Haru Inoue won 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 over Corey Pang. Marius Frosa won his fifth-flight match 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) against Antoine Noel, and Murkel Dellien won in three sets over Axel Damiens, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the sixth flight. No. 57 Ben Donovan - the lone ranked singles player for the Mustangs - topped Miroslav Herzan 6-4, 6-2 in the second flight.

In doubles play, Inoue and Herzan lost 6-2 in their top flight matchup against No. 35-ranked Pang and Donovan. Eddie Stoica and Jocelyn Devilliers beat Karl Enander and Tim Tan 6-1 in the second flight, while Frosa and Dellien went over Garrett Auproux and Josh Ortlip 6-4, giving WSU the clinching point over the Mustangs.

The win was WSU's first victory over a ranked opponent this year, having previously lost to No. 14 Oklahoma and No. 7 Texas, and is also the first for first-year head coach Danny Bryan.

Later in the afternoon, Wichita State defeated Fresno State by a score of 4-3, in similar fashion. Inoue grabbed his team-leading 19th singles win on the season, winning a tough 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-5 battle against Xander Veys in the top flight. Stoica won his fourth-flight match with a pair of tiebreakers, defeating Youssef Hassan 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4). Stoica is now 17-8 on the year, one win behind Inoue. Dellien also picked up another win on the day, handling Jeremy Moser in sixth flight match 6-1, 6-2.

The Shockers won the doubles point - and the match - with a pair of 6-2 victories by Stoica/Devilliers and Frosa/Dellien. Inoue and Herzan were down 4-5 in the top flight against Patrik Pech and Euan McIntosh, but went unfinished once WSU sealed the dual for the championship.
