WSU Faces MVC Champion No. 21 Drake Saturday

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State wraps up the regular season at No. 21 Drake Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. CT tipoff in the Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Quickly - Wichita State (14-14, 9-8) plays at Drake, (24-4, 17-0), the MVC Champion Saturday afternoon. On Thursday, WSU lost at UNI, 62-37, while Drake defeated Missouri State, 98-91.

-Earlier this year, Drake defeated WSU, 83-78, on Dec. 30.

-WSU is tied for fourth in The Valley at 9-8 with SIU. Drake is the league champion and UNI is currently second with Missouri State third at 12-5.

-The Shockers are either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament next week in Moline, Ill. Since the two seeds match-up in the quarterfinals, WSU will play the 2:32 p.m., game on Fri., March 10, against SIU.

-Last weekend, WSU won, 65-43, against Loyola, and 67-43, against Indiana State in Wichita.

-Angiee Tompkins earned the Shockers' first weekly honor of the year with her Newcomer of the Week honor on Monday.

-Former Shocker Head Coach Linda Hargrove was named Shocker Head Coach Jan. 22. She was the fourth head coach in Shocker history, and is now the eighth head coach. She was 113-136 at WSU in nine seasons, and had a collegiate coaching record of 429-248 in 26 seasons.

-Hargrove is now 119-140 at WSU in a 10th season and 435-252 overall. The Evansville win was her first in Charles Koch Arena since returning to the bench.

-Assistant Coach Kirk Crawford was the acting head coach for WSU's wins against Bradley and Illinois State Jan. 20/22. WSU defeated Illinois State, 67-45, and Bradley, 65-54.

-The Shockers are 493-540 in conference play since 1982 in the Gateway (1982-91) and Missouri Valley Conferences (1992-Present).

On Drake... Drake won a 98-91 shootout over Missouri State Thursday night. Six Bulldogs led by freshman Becca Hittner, who scored a career-high 22 points, finished in double figure points. Wendell had 21 points and a career-best eight assists while freshman Brenni Rose tallied 16 points, one off her career high. Sophomore Sammie Bachrodt and Ingle each added 11 points while sophomore Nicole Miller had 10 points off the bench. Drake, 17-0 in the MVC, is on an 18-game winning streak and vying to go undefeated in MVC regular season play. The Bulldogs with a 12-0 home record are also vying for a perfect home record with a win and would be just the second Drake team to ever finish a season unbeaten at home joining the 1978- 79 team. A victory Saturday also gives Drake 25 this year, the most since the 2001-02 season.

On the Series... In the all-time series, WSU trails Drake, 51-29. The Bulldogs are 30-7 in Des Moines against the Shockers. Drake swept WSU a year ago and won the first meeting this season on Dec. 30.

In the First Meeting... Despite a career-high night from Rangie Bessard, the Shockers fell to Drake by a score of 83-78 on Dec. 30 in Charles Koch Arena. Bessard led the way for the Shockers, scoring a career-high 32 points and also grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. Angiee Tompkins also added 12 points while Jeliah Preston and TaQuandra Mike both scored nine. Lizzy Wendell scored 32 points for the Bulldogs, shooting 13-of-18 from the field. Becca Hittner, Sammie Bachrodt and Caitlin Ingle also added double figures for the Bulldogs.

Last Time Out... Wichita State shot 29 percent from the field and committed 18 turnovers to fall, 62-35, at UNI Thursday night in the McLeod Center. The Shockers were led in scoring by Rangie Bessard's 13 points and Angiee Tompkins' nine points. UNI was led by Madison Weekly and Kennedy Kirkpatrick, who had 14 points each. UNI shot 39.6 percent (21-53) from the field for the game to the Shockers' 29.2 percent (14-48), and out-boarded WSU, 42-26. WSU missed all 10 three-point attempts. UNI won all four quarters, 12-9, 14-6, 18-9 and 18-13.

Tompkins Getting Comfortable... Angiee Tompkins averaged a double-double in the Shockers' two wins last week with 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds a game. It was her 10th and 11th double-figure scoring games of the season. She has also had double-figure scoring in four of the last five games, averaging 14.0 points in those games. Shes's also averaged 7.2 boards a game in those games.

More on Tompkins... For the week, Angiee Tompkins shot 63.6 percent (14-22) from the field. Against Loyola she had 18 points and 10 rebounds and against Indiana State she had 15 points and 10 boards. The 10 boards were a career high while the 18 points were two shy of her career high.

MVC Double-Doubles... Wichita State has 10 double-doubles this season with all of them coming during Missouri Valley Conference play. Rangie Bessard had the first seven, Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage has had one, and Angiee Tompkins has the last two.

Five-Straight... Wichita State's five-game winning streak, broken Feb. 5 against Missouri State, was its longest since the 2014-15 season when the Shockers won 12-straight to close out the regular-season and three-straight tournament games.

Bessard the Second... Rangie Bessard has scored in double-figures in 12-straight games and 22 of the 24 she has played in.
She is the second-leading scorer in the Valley at 16.3 points a game. In Valley-only play, she has double-figures in the 14-of-15 games she has played and is also the second-leading scorer in MVC-only games at 16.7 a game.

Not Average... Junior Rangie Bessard's career scoring average of 15.9 points a game through 48 games is on pace to finish in the Shocker Top 5 in history. She averaged 15.5 points a game a year ago in 24 games, and this year is at 16.3 a game. Marguerite Keeley averaged 20.8 points a game from 1975-77, while Allison Daniel averaged 14.9 points a game from 1982-86.

Martin Moves Up… With 22 blocks this season senior Brittany Martin has 75 for her career and is 18 from moving into the Shocker Top 10.  The Shocker record is 256 by Theresa Dreiling from 1979-83.

Scoring Leaders... After 28 games, the Shockers are led in scoring by Rangie Bessard (16.1), Angiee Tompkins (8.7) and TaQuandra Mike (8.1). Bessard also leads WSU on the boards with 7.1 a game.

On the Web... Wichita State's home games this season will be broadcast on the internet at www.goshockers.com/watch/ with Steve Strain, who is in his third season calling the action for the Shockers. Steve, who is a veteran of radio and television, called women's basketball for the Texas Tech Lady Raiders from 2009-13. Strain will also call road games on KNSS 1330. Senior Jaleesa Chapel, injured prior to the first regular-season game, is assisting on the radio as analyst. She is a communications major.
