Shockers Host Sycamores on Senior Day

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State closes out its 2016-17 home slate this weekend when Indiana State come to town Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Quickly -Wichita State (13-13, 8-7) plays host to Indiana State (12-14, 6-9) in the second meetings of the two teams this season. WSU defeated Loyola Friday night, while Indiana State lost at Misosuri State, 73-63.

-WSU is fourth in The Valley at 8-7 with three games remaining. Indiana State is sixth at 6-9.

-Following Sunday's game, WSU will recognize four seniors from this season's roster in Hannah Mortimer, Marija Pacar, Brittany Martin and TaQuandra Mike.

-Last weekend, WSU won, 76-69, at Bradley Sunday and a 54-50 loss at Illinois State on Friday night. Indiana State lost to Drake and UNI last weekend, losing to UNI in overtime, 61-59.

-Former Shocker Head Coach Linda Hargrove was named Shocker Head Coach Jan. 22. She was the fourth head coach in Shocker history, and is now the eighth head coach. She was 113-136 at WSU in nine seasons, and had a collegiate coaching record of 429-248 in 26 seasons.

-Hargrove is now 118-139 at WSU in a 10th season and 434-251 overall. The Evansville win was her first in Charles Koch Arena since returning to the bench.

-Assistant Coach Kirk Crawford was the acting head coach for WSU's wins against Bradley and Illinois State Jan. 20/22. WSU defeated Illinois State, 67-45, and Bradley, 65-54.

-The Shockers are 4912-539 in conference play since 1982 in the Gateway (1982-91) and Missouri Valley Conferences (1992-Present).

On Indiana State... The Sycamores came up short in Springfield, falling to Missouri State, 73-63. Ashley Taia led the charge for the Trees with 18 points while sophomore Tierra Webb added 11. ISU cut the Lady Bear lead to just three points with under two minutes remaining but MSU took control and connected on 10 free throws to close out the game. The Sycamores lead the Missouri Valley Conference, holding opponents just 57.4 points per game this season. Indiana State is also leading the conference field goal percent defense, allowing the opposition to shoot just 35 percent from the floor. Indiana State is 9-6 when holding opponents under 60 points.
    ISU is led in scoring by Ashley Taia who has been the most consistent offense for ISU this season. Taia has scored in double-figures 17 times including a career high 26 points at Southern Illinois on New Year's Day. The Brisbane, Australia ranks ninth in the MVC in scoring at 12.6 points per game.

On the Series... WSU trails the all-time series against the Indiana State, 36-34. The Shockers defeated ISU in Terre Haute on Jan. 27, 56-42, and have won eight of the last 10 games played in the series.

In the First Meeting... Wichita State out-scored Indiana State 17-5 in the third quarter and held on for a 56-42 win in the Hulman Center.
    WSU (9-10, 4-4)  was led in scoring by Rangie Bessard and Keke Thompson who had 12 points each. Tamara Lee backed them with 11 points. Bessard added 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
    ISU (10-9, 4-4) was led in scoring by Rhagen Smith's 17 points. Ashley Taia and Wendi Bibbins had 11 boards each for the Sycamores.

Last Time Out... Wichita State out-distanced Loyola, 65-43 on Friday night at Charles Koch Arena to improve to 13-13 overall, 8-7 in the MVC.
    Angiee Tompkins led WSU with her first career double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Rangie Bessard, returning after being out one game with injury, had 14 points and two blocks off the bench. TaQuandra Mike added eight points, three assists, and three steals. LU was led in scoring with nine points each from Kaitlyn Williams and Brandi Segars.
    For the game, WSU out-shot the Ramblers, 43.1 percent (28-65) to 35.7 percent (15-42). The Shockers also won the battle of the boards, 41-28, and created 25 Loyola turnovers, 14 of them were steals.

Lozada-Cabbage Breaks Out...Sophomore forward Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage collected her first double-double of the season with a career-high 13 points and career-high 17 rebounds to lead Wichita State to a 76-69 win Sunday afternoon at Bradley.

Tompkins Makes A Difference... Junior forward Angiee Tompkins continues to have a presence in the paint as she averaged 13 points and 4.0 rebounds in WSU's two games last week. She shot 52.6 percent (10-19) from the field. She also averaged 2.0 steals. Against Bradley she had 18 points and four rebounds.

Shockers Face Key Injuries... WSU's leading scorer Rangie Bessard missed the Bradley game with an injury she sustained in Friday's game at Illinois State, while starting point guard Keke Thompson missed her third-straight game with injury. Both played against Loyola.

Hargrove Gets "First" Home win... Linda Hargrove got her first Charles Koch Arena win in the game against Evansville, her "first" in the building since returning to the sideline. Her previous home wins came in the building when it was named Levitt Arena prior to the renovation. Her previous home win came in her first stint in her last home game of the 1998 season, an 60-58 win against Indiana State.

Five-Straight... Wichita State's five-game winning streak, broken Feb. 5 against Missouri State, was its longest since the 2014-15 season when the Shockers won 12-straight to close out the regular-season and three-straight tournament games.

Bessard the Second... Rangie Bessard has scored in double-figures in 11-straight games and 17 of the last 18 she has played in.
She is the second-leading scorer in the Valley at 16.2 points a game. In Valley-only play, she has double-figures in the 13-of-14 games she has played and is also the second-leading scorer in MVC-only games at 16.6 a game.

Not Average... Junior Rangie Bessard's career scoring average of 15.9 points a game through 47games is on pace to finish in the Shocker Top 5 in history. She averaged 15.5 points a game a year ago in 24 games, and this year is at 16.2 a game. Marguerite Keeley averaged 20.8 points a game from 1975-77, while Allison Daniel averaged 14.9 points a game from 1982-86.

Martin Moves Up… With 18 blocks this season senior Brittany Martin has 131 for her career and is 20 from moving into the Shocker Top 10.  The Shocker record is 256 by Theresa Dreiling from 1979-83.

Rangie Fills It Up... After 26 games, the Shockers are led in scoring by Bessard (16.2) and Mike (8.4). Bessard also leads WSU on the boards with 7.3 a game. She had 17, 20, 16 and 12 points, respectively, in the first four games of the year, but was injured in the Stanford game and missed the Northeastern and Arkansas State games. In the 19 games since returning, she has had double-figure scoring in 17-of-18 games, and is averaging 16.7 ppg in Valley play.

On the Web... Wichita State's home games this season will be broadcast on the internet at www.goshockers.com/watch/ with Steve Strain, who is in his third season calling the action for the Shockers. Steve, who is a veteran of radio and television, called women's basketball for the Texas Tech Lady Raiders from 2009-13. Strain will also call road games on KNSS 1330. Senior Jaleesa Chapel, injured prior to the first regular-season game, is assisting on the radio as analyst. She is a communications major.
