Shockers Meet SIU Sunday

WICHITA, Kan. - Coming off a buzzer-beating win over Evansville Friday night, Wichita State will close out its homestand Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. vs. Southern Illinois.

-Wichita State (11-11, 6-5) plays host to Southern Illinois (11-12, 5-7) Sunday afternoon. SIU is currently in sixth place after a 73-59 loss at Missouri State on Friday night.

-The Shockers are in fourth in the MVC standings at 6-5 behind Missouri State, at 8-3. 

-WSU is coming off a 69-68 win Friday night against Evansville where the Shockers executed a set in-bounds layup play that Rangie Bessard converted into the one-point win with an assist from Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage with four seconds remaining. Bessard had 26 points and seven boards to lead WSU. All 10 players that played scored for the Shockers who shot 46.7 percent from the field.

-Former Shocker Head Coach Linda Hargrove was named Shocker Head Coach Jan. 22. She was the fourth head coach in Shocker history, and is now the eighth head coach. She was 113-136 at WSU in nine seasons, and had a collegiate coaching record of 429-248 in 26 seasons.

-Hargrove is now 116-137 at WSU in a 10th season and 432-249 overall. The Evansville win was her first in Charles Koch Arena since returning to the bench.

-Assistant Coach Kirk Crawford was the acting head coach for WSU's wins against Bradley and Illinois State Jan. 20/22. WSU defeated Illinois State, 67-45, and Bradley, 65-54.

-The Shockers are 491-537 in conference play since 1982 in the Gateway (1982-91) and Missouri Valley Conferences (1992-Present).

On the Series ... Sunday's game will be the 71st  game in the series that started in 1981. SIU leads the all-time series, 37-33.

On SIU... The Salukis are led in scoring by Rishonda Napier's 14.1 points while Kylie Giebelhausen averages 13.0 points a game and Kim Nebo averages 10.1 points a game. Nebo also leads in rebounding with 7.5 a game. SIU's longest win streak was three games in the non-conference portion of the season. SIU does have a 104-point game this season in a 104-35 win against Brescia on Nov. 26. SIu also has a three-game losing streak with losses at UNI, at Drake at at home against Indiana State. Head Coach Cindy Stein is 53-63 in her fourth year at SIu and 335-269 in her 20th year as a head coach.

In the First Meeting... Wichita State lost, 77-54, in the first meeting this season at SIU. TaQuandra Mike had 14 points and Rangie Bessard had 10 rebounds in the loss for WSU.

Five-Straight... Wichita State's five-game winning streak, broken last Sunday, was its longest since the 2014-15 season when the Shockers won 12-straight to close out the regular-season and three-straight tournament games.

Bessard the Second... Rangie Bessard has scored in double-figures in eight-straight games and 14 of the last 15 as the second-leading scorer in the Valley at 16.3 points a game. In Valley-only play, she has double-figures in 10-of-11 games and is also the second-leading scorer in MVC-only games at 16.9 a game.

Not Average... Junior Rangie Bessard's career scoring average of 15.7 points a game through 44 games is on pace to finish in the Shocker Top 5 in history. She averaged 15.5 points a game a year ago in 24 games, and this year is at 15.8 a game. Marguerite Keeley averaged 20.8 points a game from 1975-77, while Allison Daniel averaged 14.9 points a game from 1982-86.

Last Sunday... Despite forcing 18 turnovers and scoring 34 points in the paint, the Shockers fell to Missouri State 65-60, last Sunday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
     The Shockers forced 18 turnovers in the game while only turning the ball over 14 times and also outscored the Lady Bears in the paint 34-14. The Lady Bears knocked down eight three-pointers while the Shockers hit just three.
     Keke Thompson led the Shockers with a career high 16 points, while Rangie Bessard followed with 15 points. Bessard and Diamond Lockhart also grabbed six boards.
     Lexi Hughes led the way for the Lady Bears scoring a game-high 22 points, grabbing two rebounds and collecting two assists.

Martin Moves Up… With 18 blocks this season senior Brittany Martin has 131 for her career and is 20 from moving into the Shocker Top 10.  The Shocker record is 256 by Theresa Dreiling from 1979-83.

Rangie Fills It Up... After 22 games, the Shockers are led in scoring by Bessard (16.3) and Mike (8.4). Bessard also leads WSU on the boards with 6.9 a game. She had 17, 20, 16 and 12 points, respectively, in the first four games of the year, but was injured in the Stanford game and missed the Northeastern and Arkansas State games. In the 16 games since returning, she has had double-figure scoring in 15-of-16 games, and is averaging 16.9 ppg in Valley play.

On the Web... Wichita State's home games this season will be broadcast on the internet at www.goshockers.com/watch/ with Steve Strain, who is in his third season calling the action for the Shockers. Steve, who is a veteran of radio and television, called women's basketball for the Texas Tech Lady Raiders from 2009-13. Strain will also call road games on KNSS 1330. Senior Jaleesa Chapel, injured prior to the first regular-season game, is assisting on the radio as analyst. She is a communications major.
