Â
THE STARTING FIVE:
Â
1 --- GRAND OPENING: The Shockers opened with their most lopsided win in 11 seasons under
Gregg Marshall (52 points), 109-57 over the UMKC Kanagaroos... WSU's 39-point halftime lead (62-23) was the largest in the program's modern history... Darral Willis Jr's double-double performance (19 points, 10 rebounds) was the fourth of his career... Willis led a group of six double-figure scorers that also included
Landry Shamet (17),
Shaquille Morris (16),
Conner Frankamp (11),
Samajae Haynes-Jones (11) and
Rauno Nurger (11)... Frankamp narrowly missed a double-double of his own, logging a career-high nine assists... WSU's 26 assists (on 39 field goals) was another Marshall Era best. The Shockers shot 60.9% from the field (to 27.7% for UMKC) and hit 13-of-23 threes to lead by as many as 62 down the stretch, helped by five double-figure scoring runs... WSU outrebounded the Roos by 25 and outscored them in the paint, 47-4... 11 blocks was their best since the 2014 MVC Tournament semifinal vs. Evansville (11).
Â
2 --- A MARSHALL MILESTONE:Â Marshall will coach his 353
rd game on the WSU bench, tying Ralph Miller (1951-64) for the most in Shocker history. Marshall (262-90 in parts of 11 seasons) surpassed Miller as the program's all-time wins leader in February, 2015.
Â
3 --- FAMILIAR FACES: Charleston head coach, Earl Grant worked six seasons under Marshall, three at Winthrop (2004-07) and three at Wichita State (2007-10). Grant is one of six former Marshall assistants currently leading D-I programs... Former Shocker Matt Braeuer is in his second year as Director of Basketball Operations. Braeuer was the starting point guard for WSU's 2006 Sweet 16 run and was a senior on Marshall's first Shocker team.
Â
4 --- FAMILIAR FACES II: Likewise, Marshall is a familiar face in Charleston. The South Carolina native spent eight years (1988-96) as an assistant on John Kresse's staff at the CofC, where he helped the Cougars make the most successful NAIA-to-Division I transition ever. In 1994, Charleston became the first school in D-I men's basketball history to earn an NCAA at-large berth in its first season of postseason eligibility. NIT bids followed in 1995 and 1996.
Â
5 --- ONE MORE THREE FOR HISTORY: If Shamet connects on a three-pointer again Charleston, he'll tie Ron Baker's record for consecutive games with a triple (27). Frankamp extended his own streak to 23 games on Friday. [See page 2 for more on the streak].
Â
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES WITH CHARLESTON:
*WSU took the only meeting in the quarterfinals of the 2011 NIT. The Shockers won 82-75 to punch a ticket to New York, where they eventually won the title.Â
*Gabe Blair led WSU with 16 points and eight rebounds.Â
*Shocker fans still remember an incredible long-range shooting display from senior Andrew Goudelock, who later played parts of three seasons in the NBA after being drafted in the second round by the Lakers. Goudelock (31 points) hit seven three-pointers in the second half to keep things interesting after WSU had built a 20-point lead. Goudelock's 15 three-point attempts and 27 total field goal attempts are both Marshall Era highs for an opponent.
Â
SCOUTING COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON:
*Earl Grant is in his fourth season as CofC head coach. His teams have made steady progress, from 9-24 to 17-14 to 25-10 in year No. 3. He was named Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 2017 after leading the Cougars to the CAA Tournament final and a No. 5 seed in the NIT.
*The Cougars are coming off a 25-10 campaign under and return all five starters from last year's NIT squad. It marked the program's 17th 20-win season in 26 seasons of its NCAA Division I history and first postseason appearance (NCAA or NIT) since 2011 after reaching the CAA championship game.
*Joe Chealey, a 6-4 senior guard, is the CAA preseason palyer of the year. Teammates Jarrell Brantley (6-7, Jr., F) and Grant Riller (6-3, So., G) joined him on the preseason first and second teams respectively.
Â
FULL SETS OF VETS:
*Both programs return all five starters from last year, although WSU's leading scorer and rebounder from last year,
Markis McDuffie, will miss the game with a foot injury.
*WSU is one of five D-I teams that return over 90 percent of their scoring (91.2%) and rebounding (91.2%). Bradley (96.8/95.8), Colgate (93.0, 93.5), USC (97.9/96.6) and Cornell (100/100) are the others.
Â
WSU-CHARLESTON MATCHUP MASHUP:
*Charleston freshman center Samba Ndiaye played at Sunrise Christian Academy near Wichita.
*WSU is pledged to appear in the 2018 Charleston Classic. It will be a homecoming of sorts for
Gregg Marshall, who was born in Greenville, S.C. and has deep ties to the area. In addition to his eight years at College of Charleston, he led the Winthrop program for nine seasons.
*Marshall has faced each of South Carolina's 12 Division I programs at least once, save for Winthrop (his former school) and Wofford. Since arriving at WSU, Marshall is 6-0 against South Carolina schools and 45-14 overall. Throw in six wins over D-II programs and the record climbs to 51-14.
*Since Charleston's last visit to Wichita in the 2011 NIT, WSU has played 92 times at Charles Koch Arena, going 88-4 (.957). That includes a 38-0 record against non-conference foes.
Â
RANDOM KNOWLEDGE:
*WSU is 5-0 all-time on Nov. 13
*Senior forward
Zach Brown will play his 100th career game Monday evening. He's the team's active leader in starts (62) and minutes (1,732)
*WSU's 109 points in the opener against UMKC was the fifth-highest total in American history.
*WSU, Tulane (102 vs. LIU Brooklyn) and Cincinnati (107 vs. future Shocker opponent Savannah State) all eclipsed 100 points on Friday – the first time in the league's five seasons that three teams have all broken the century mark on a single day.
*Over the last two seasons, WSU is 31-0 when outshooting its opponent and 1-5 when outshot.
*WSU is 82-1 under Marshall when scoring at least 80 points, with 59 consecutive wins. A triple overtime loss at Drake in January, 2012 is the lone exception.
Â
SHOOTING STARSÂ Â Â Â Â
*
