Shockers Open with 52-Point Win over UMKC

WICHITA, Kan. – Darral Willis Jr. finished with a double-double to lead a group of six double-figure scorers, and No. 7/8 Wichita State posted its most lopsided margin of victory in 11 seasons under Gregg Marshall, 109-57 over UMKC Friday night at Charles Koch Arena.
 
The Shockers mounted five different runs of 10-0 or more, capped by a 15-0 push that upped their lead to as many as 62 points in the final minutes.
 
WSU posted its largest margin ever in a season opener (52 points), topping a 69-18 win over Sterling College on Jan. 13, 1920. Its 109 points were the highest opening night total since the 1964-65 team kicked off its Final Four season with 114 points against Long Beach State.
 
The 52-point win bested the previous Marshall Era high -- a 94-44 decision against Chicago State on Dec. 14, 2011 – by two points.
 
WSU's 26 assists was also a Marshall Era best, topping a 25-assist effort against Bradley in January, 2017.
 
The Shockers (1-0) shot 60.9 percent as a team and hit 13-of-23 three-point attempts. They out-rebounded UMKC 51-26.
 
Willis finished with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, going 2-of-3 from beyond the aec. The 6-9 senior hit his first career three-pointer less than three minutes into the game and connected on another just 40 seconds later.
 
Landry Shamet returned to the starting lineup and logged 17 points in 17 minutes, hitting 4-of-5 from three. He's connected on a triple in 26-straight games – one shy of Ron Baker's school record.
 
Conner Frankamp dished out a career-high nine assists to go with 11 points.
 
The senior went 1-of-3 from deep to extend his own three-point streak to 23 games – the fourth-longest in school history.
 
Shaquille Morris recorded four blocks to reach 100 for his career and moved past P.J. Couisnard into seventh-place on WSU's career list. He also the night 2-of-2 from three on his way to 16 points.
 
Samajae Haynes-Jones and Rauno Nurger also tacked on 11 points each.
 
WSU won its season opener for the 16th consecutive year.
 
WSU trailed 8-7 three minutes into the first half but hit its next seven shots to kick off a 13-0 run.
 
Willis nailed threes on back-to-back trips, and Morris added one for good measure.
 
The Shockers opened 6-of-7 from three-point range for a 26-11 lead with 13:06 left in the first half. Consecutive treys from Rauno Nurger and Samajae Haynes-Jones prompted a 30-second timeout from the UMKC bench.
 
Austin Reaves' three-pointer and a driving dunk by Shamet upped the margin 33-14 with 9:38 to go.
 
Morris matched Willis with his second three (and WSU's eighth of the night), then dunked to fuel an 11-0 run, as WSU led 49-21 at the 4:47-mark.
 
UMKC scored to break a five-minute field goal drought, but the Shockers answered with another 11-0 spurt heading into halftime. Reaves hit a three (WSU's ninth of the half) and Nurger busted free for a layup to send WSU into half up 62-23.
 
The Shockers' 62 first-half points tied for the most by a Marshall team against a Division I opponent.
 
WSU used another 13-0 run to go up 88-33 with 11:35 to play in the game. A 15-0 push concluded at the 4:50-mark with the Shockers up 103-41 for their largest lead of the night (62 points).
