Shocker Radio Postgame: Marshall | Morris

WICHITA, Kan. – Landry Shamet tied a school record for consecutive games with a three-pointer, and No. 6/8 Wichita State's talented big men picked, popped and rolled over College of Charleston, 81-64, Monday night at Charles Koch Arena.
 
WSU (2-0) extended its regular season winning streak to 14, dating back to Jan. 14, 2017.
 
The Shockers' three primary big men combined for 50 points and 22 rebounds. They were 4-of-9 from three.
 
Shaquille Morris tallied a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Rauno Nurger set a new career-high with 16 points, and Darral Willis added 14 points and seven rebounds.
 
Landry Shamet tied Ron Baker's school record for consecutive games with a three-pointer. After battling foul trouble for much the game, Shamet's triple with 6:22 to go extended the streak to 27, matching Baker's run from the 2014-15 season.
 
Samajae Haynes-Jones finished with seven points and seven assists with one turnover. Rashard Kelly chipped in nine boards.
 
Charleston (1-1) – coached by former WSU assistant Earl Grant – is the preseason favorite to win the Colonial Athletic Association.
 
Grant Riller led the Cougars with 20 points, and Joe Chealey chipped in 17.
 
Down 70-37 with just over nine minutes to play in the game, the Cougars outscored the Shockers 27-11 the rest of the way to cut into the final margin.
 
Willis had a hand in the first five Shocker field goals, with two assists, two layups and a jumper. He zipped a strike to a cutting Frankamp on the game's first possession, then found Morris posted up in the lane for a short jumper. The Shockers never trailed.
 
Willis used his size and strength to bully his way to the basket for a pair of layups, then drained a jumper for a 14-7 advantage.
 
Charleston scored to stop the bleeding on Joe Chealey's driving layup at the 12:56-mark, but the Cougars managed just two more field goals on 14 attempts over the remainder of the half.
 
Frankamps three-pointer keyed a 9-0 run. Morris hit a jumper and rolled to the basket for a layup on the next two possessions. He scored 12 of his team-high 14 first-half points over the final 11:21.
 
Morris' three-pointer keyed another 8-0 spurt late in the half, and he added another in the closing seconds to give WSU a commanding 47-22 lead heading into halftime.
 
WSU outscored Charleston 22-2 in the paint and outrebounded the smaller Cougars 24-13.
 
Morris (14 points) and Willis (10) accounted for over half of the Shockers' first half tally. They shot 50 percent as a team (17-of-34) while holding Charleston to just 21.7 percent (5-of-23).
 
Another 7-0 Shocker run early in the second half pushed the lead north of 30 points for the first time. Morris hit a jumper, Frankamp nailed a three and Shamet (who missed parts of the first half with foul trouble) converted a layup for his first field goal to make it a 54-23 lead.
 
Shocker big men accounted for 13 of the next 16 points. Morris converted two free throws for a 70-37 edge with 9:06 to go.
 
Notes:
 
*Morris (102 career blocks) passed Garrett Stutz for sixth place on the school's all-time list. He needs just one more to catch Xavier McDaniel (1981-85) for fifth and three more to match Gene Wiley (1959-62) for fourth.
*Frankamp extended his own three-point streak to 24 games.
