Shockers Win Fifth-Straight, 83-64

CHICAGO  --  Wichita State won its fifth-straight game, an 83-64 decision, at Loyola Sunday afternoon behind four double-figure scorers, including 20 points from TaQuandra Mike.

Mike tied her season-high, while Rangie Bessard had 17 points, Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage had a career-high 12 and Kayla Williams had 10. WSU shot 53.3 percent for the game (32-60). WSU's 83 points were its second most of the season.

Defensively, WSU forced 21 Rambler turnovers and held LU to 48.9 percent (23-47).

Loyola's Brandi Segars led the Ramblers with 15 points. Tiara Wallace had 13.

In the third quarter, WSU extended its lead to 12 at 6:45 on a Mike three-pointer, 50-38, after a 41-32 halftime lead. WSU kept Loyola at a steady double-digit lead before going up 15, its largest lead to that point, on a Tompkins offensive rebound and basket with 18 seconds left in the third quarter. A Rambler basket cut it back to 13, 63-50, as time ran out in the third quarter.

In the fourth, WSU out-scored LU, 5-4, over the first 5:17 of the quarter, to push the lead back to 15, 69-54, at 4:43.

WSU went up 16, 76-60, at 3:20 on a three-pointer by Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage, while the Shockers extended the lead to its largest of the game (21) before the quarter was over, 82-63, after six straight free throws.

To open the game, Wichita State forced three-straight turnovers in the Rambler's first three possessions to go ahead 4-0, but each team had four turnovers by the media timeout at 4:56 and WSU held an 8-5 lead.

When WSU's second platoon came in at 5:02, three-straight Mike baskets gave WSU a 15-10 lead. Loyola battled back to within two by the end of the quarter, 19-17. Mike led all scorers with seven points through the first quarter.

In the second, WSU extended the lead to 10, 30-20, by 6:09. Bessard contributed four during the 11-3 run, and a three-pointer at 6:11 gave WSU its largest lead. Each team traded baskets over the final half of the quarter as the Shockers went into the halftime locker room up 41-32 after winning the quarter, 22-15.

For the half, nine Shockers contributed to the nine-point lead with Mike's nine points leading WSU. WSU out-shot the Ramblers, 60 percent (8-13) to 44 percent (11-25). WSU also forced 14 LU turnovers.

Wichita State is next in action 2 p.m., Sunday against Missouri State, the Shockers' travel partner in the Missouri Valley Conference.
