Shockers Fall to Lady Bears, 65-60

WICHITA, Kan. – Despite forcing 18 turnovers and scoring 34 points in the paint, the Shockers fell to Missouri State 65-60, Sunday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
 
The Shockers forced 18 turnovers in the game while only turning the ball over 14 times and also outscored the Lady Bears in the paint 34-14. The Lady Bears knocked down eight three-pointers while the Shockers hit just three.
 
Keke Thompson led the Shockers with a career high 16 points, while Rangie Bessard followed with 15 points. Bessard and Diamond Lockhart also grabbed six boards.
 
Lexi Hughes led the way for the Lady Bears scoring a game-high 22 points, grabbing two rebounds and collecting two assists.
 
After going scoreless for the first four minutes of the first quarter, the Shockers were able to get on the board with a layup from Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage, falling behind early, 8-2. Back-to-back baskets by Thompson and an unconventional three-point play gave the Shockers their first lead of the game, 9-8 with three minutes left in the quarter. With 20 seconds left in the half, Jeliah Preston hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 12, but a free throw by the Lady Bears gave Missouri State the lead at the end of the quarter, 13-12.
 
The Shockers went on a run to start the second quarter, taking a 19-13 lead. With three minutes left to play in the first half, Angiee Tompkins made a layup to keep the lead at six, 28-22. Before the end of the half, the Lady Bears were able to knock down four free throws and cut the lead to three, 30-27.
 
To start the third quarter, the Lady Bears quickly tied the game, but an and-one by Bessard extended the Shockers lead back to four, 40-36. Kayla Williams hit a three to extend the lead to 46-38, but the Lady Bears hit a three of their own on the next possession to make it 46-41. With 3.8 seconds left in the quarter, the Lady Bears knocked down one free throw to cut the lead to three, 48-45 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
The Lady Bears came out strong in the fourth, scoring the first two baskets and taking a 49-48 lead. A layup by Thompson with six minutes left to play tied the game at 54. A Thompson free throw gave the Shockers a 55-54 lead, but an and-one by Lexi Hughes of Missouri State gave the lead right back to the Lady Bears, 57-55. With the score tied at 57, the Lady Bears knocked down a three-pointer to take a 60-57 lead with two minutes to play. With 1:23 left to play Thompson drove to the basket, finishing the basket while getting fouled and knocking down the free throw to tie the game again at 60. With 27.8 seconds, Missouri State made one free throw to take a one point lead. Again with 17.3 seconds Missouri State knocked down two more free throws to extend the lead to three, and the Shockers were unable to score, falling to the Lady Bears, 65-60.
 
The Shockers are now 10-11 overall and 5-5 in Missouri Valley Conference play. Wichita State will be in action again on Feb. 10, as they host Evansville at 7:00 p.m., in Charles Koch Arena.
