WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State University Foundation and the Caster Family are working on replenishing the Mitch Caster Shocker Baseball Scholarship Fund.
The scholarship was established in 2010 after Mitch lost his life in a car accident. The scholarship is to provide Shocker baseball lovers with the opportunity Mitch had. It is managed by the Wichita State University Foundation and recipients are determined by the Shocker baseball staff.
"The Mitch Caster Scholarship is one that all of our players know about," said Wichita State Head Coach
Todd Butler. "We as a staff take pride in picking the right student-athlete for this award. When I took the job here, I knew the Mitch Caster story of how great of a person he was and how he impacted his teammates. This scholarship lets Mitch's story live on."
The recipient of this year's Mitch Caster Scholarship is sophomore pitcher
Connor Lungwitz, who is a Wichita native.
The funds for this scholarship have been depleted and it is the hope of WSU and the Caster family that it can be renewed through a GoFundMe page and the WSU Foundation.
Caster played for the Shockers from 2008-10 as an outfielder and a pitcher. He played in 74 games during this three-year career and also made 13 appearances on the mound. He received his Associate of Arts degree from WSU posthumously on Dec. 12, 2010.
