NORMAN, Okla. – With a 2-1 win over Tulsa, the Wichita State softball team won its first ever NCAA Regional game to advance to the next round to face Ole Miss.
Katie Malone got the start for the Shockers, and pitched 7.0 innings. After allowing two hits in the first innings, Malone did not allow another hit until the sixth. Malone finished the game for her 11
th complete game of the season.
With runners on first and third and one out in the top of the third,
Brittany Fortner singled into right field, scoring
Cacy Williams from third and advancing
Mackenzie Wright to second, to make the score, 1-0.
A single up the middle from
Liz Broyles, scored Wright from second to push the Shockers' lead to 2-0.
After back-to-back singles to begin the sixth for the Golden Hurricane, a diving catch by Fortner and an error at second base, Tulsa had the bases loaded with one out.
Malone was able to get the next batter to pop out to the shortstop for an infield fly for the second out. Malone then walked the next batter to make the score 2-1. A pop-out to third base ended the innings, getting the Shockers out of a jam.
Wichita State was able to get the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, but a groundout to the pitcher by Broyles ended the inning, giving the Shockers a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Malone got the leadoff hitter to fly-out to center for the first out of the inning. A pop-out to the second baseman recorded the second out and a foul out to third gave the Shockers a 2-1 win.
With the win, the Shockers will take on Ole Miss today at 6:50 p.m., for a chance to play in the Regional Championship game vs. No. 3 Oklahoma. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
