Shockers Fall to No. 3 Oklahoma in 1st Round

NORMAN, Okla. – In front of the largest crowd in Norman Regional history, at 1,731, the Wichita State softball team lost its first game of the regional to No. 3 Oklahoma, by a score of 7-2.

Katie Malone got the start in the circle, but threw just 0.2 innings, allowing five runs on four hits. Jenni Brooks then entered the game and threw 5.1 innings and allowed just two runs.

Oklahoma got things going in the bottom of the first, reaching on an error with the leadoff hitter. After a walk to the second batter of the innings, the Sooners doubled to right center to score one run.

With the bases loaded and one out, Nicole Pendley hit a grand slam over the left center wall to push the Sooner's lead to 5-0.
Brittany Fortner got things started in the top of the third with a one-out single. Cacy Williams then doubled to right center, scoring Fortner from first and Williams moved to third on a throwing error.

A two-out single by Liz Broyles to right field, scored Williams to cut Oklahoma's lead to 5-2.

In the bottom of the third, the Sooners led off the inning with a double. With two-outs, a single to left field, scored the runner, making the score, 6-2.

Wichita State got runners on first and third with no outs in the top of the fifth, but were unable to capitalize after a strikeout and a pop-out ended the inning.

With one out and runners on first and third in the bottom of the fifth, the Sooners got one run across on a fielder's choice to make the score, 7-2.

The Shockers went down in order in the top of the seventh, giving Oklahoma the 7-2 victory.

Wichita State is now 35-20 on the season and will be in action again tomorrow, May 21, as they take on Tulsa at 4:00 p.m. on ESPN3 in an elimination game.
