Shockers Sweep Indiana State on Day One

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Recording its 30th win of the season in game one, the Wichita State softball team swept Indiana State on day one of a three game series by scores of 3-2 and 7-2.

In game one, Katie Malone got the start, throwing all seven innings and allowing just two runs, one of which was earned. Malone received her 12th win of the season in game one.

Paige Luellen got things going in the second inning, leading off the inning with a solo home run, to give the Shockers the lead, 1-0.

In the top of the fourth, Mackenzie Wright led off with a single and later came around to score to push the Shockers lead to two, 2-0.

The Sycamores responded in the bottom of the fourth scoring one run on a passed ball to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Indiana State tied the game at two on three straight hits.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Liz Broyles doubled to left field. After Kennedy Long entered the game to pinch-run, she was moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle to give the Shockers a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Kelsey Sterneker got the start in game two, throwing three full innings and allowing just one run. Katie Malone threw the last four innings and allowed zero earned runs to receive her second win of the day and 13th of the season.

Macklin Hitz led the offense with with three hits in game two, with two RBI and two runs scored. Wright also had multiple hits in the game.

To start game two, Hitz doubled to left-center and scored on a single from Luellen who advanced to second on the throw. After a single by Cacy Williams, Luellen was thrown out at home for the third out of the inning.

Montgomery led off the bottom of the first with a single. After a sacrifice bunt moved her to second, she scored on a triple by Malchow who was thrown out at home, trying to stretch it to an inside-the-park home run to keep the score tied at one.

With two outs in the top of the third, Wright reached base on an error and was followed by Hitz, who hit a two-run home run over the right-center wall to make the score 3-1.

The Sycamores added another run in the bottom of the fourth, after the lead-off batter reached on an error, to make the score, 3-2.

Wichita State added to their lead in the top of the sixth. Wright led off with a single, followed by two walks from Luellen and Williams and a single from Broyles. A double by Derrico scored two more runs, giving Wichita State a 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Wichita State is now 31-18 overall and 16-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Shockers continue their series with Indiana State tomorrow for a single game, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
