Kelli Spring in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Wichita State softball team has clinched at least a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title.
This is the second time in school history that the Shockers have won at least a share, winning the regular season outright in 2014.
Katie Malone got the start, throwing six strong innings and allowing four runs on a grand slam and striking out five batters. In the seventh,
Jenni Brooks entered the game and received her 16
th win of the season.
The Shockers collected 11 hits on the day with
Mackenzie Wright,
Liz Broyles,
Ashley Johnson and Spring all having multiple hit games.
Wichita State jumped out to an early lead after
Cacy Williams reached on a two-out walk. After a
Macklin Hitz single, Broyles drove
in Williams on a double to left-center to give the Shockers a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, Wichita State added onto its lead after Johnson led off with a single and
Cacy Williams got on with a walk. A double by Wright drove in both runners, giving the Shockers a 3-0 lead.
Both teams remained scoreless until the seventh inning when the Bears fought back with a grand slam hit by Elena Gambill to give Missouri State a 4-3 lead heading into the last half inning.
Brittany Fortner reached base to lead-off the bottom of the inning followed by a single from Laurie Anne Derrico who advanced to second on a throw to third base. With one out and runners on second and third, Spring doubled into right field, scoring two runs and giving the Shockers a 5-4 victory, clinching at least a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title.
The Shockers will be in action again Saturday, hosting Southern Illinois in a three game series beginning at noon. Wichita State just needs one win this weekend to clinch the MVC regular season title outright.
