Box Score (PDF)TULSA, Okla. – Seven runs in the first two innings were enough to hold off the Golden Hurricane, as the Shockers took down Tulsa by a score of 7-5 on Wednesday.
The Shockers were out-hit on the day, 13-8 but collected five hits with runners in scoring position. The Shockers' eight hits came from
Paige Luellen,
Macklin Hitz,
Cacy Williams,
Liz Broyles and two hits apiece from
McKenzie Adams and
Ashley Johnson.
Katie Malone got the start in the circle, throwing six innings and allowing three runs on nine hits.
Jenni Brooks finished the seventh and gave up two runs on four hits. Malone received her 11
th win of the season.
The Shockers got things started early in the first inning, scoring two runs on a two-run home run to center field by
Cacy Williams after Macklin hitz reached base on a two-out walk.
In the second inning,
Mackenzie Wright reached base with a leadoff walk.
McKenzie Adams followed with a bunt single to put runners at first and second with no outs. After a walk to Laurie Anne Derrico to load the bases,
Ashley Johnson doubled down the left field line to score two runs, making the score, 4-0.
Still in the second inning, Luellen followed with a double down the right field line scoring two more runs. Hitz then drove in Luellen on a single to push the score to 7-0 after two innings.
Tulsa scored two runs in the fourth inning, one on a wild pitch and the second on an infield single to make the score 7-2.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Shockers got the bases loaded with one out but were unable to capitalize, with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
The Golden Hurricane led off the bottom of the seventh with a double. After
Jenni Brooks entered the game, Tulsa scored three runs on five hits before Luellen made a great play in right field to end the game by a score of 7-5.
Wichita State is now 29-18 overall and remains 14-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Shockers will be in action again on Friday against Indiana State, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
