Shockers Sweep Bears on Record Setting Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – With an offensive outburst in the first game, the Wichita State softball team swept the day against Missouri State by scores of, 17-6 and 3-2, collecting 21 hits in the first game, setting a new record at Killian Stadium, which has been open since 2009.

In the first game offensively, the Shockers were hot, collecting 21 hits and 17 runs, tying the Killian Stadium record for runs in a game.

Macklin Hitz led the way with two doubles, two home runs, one single and seven RBI in game one. In the game she broke the school record for total bases in the game with 13. The previous record was 9.

Paige Luellen also hit two home runs, had three RBI and scored four runs. Mackenzie Wright and Mauriana Jamele also added home runs. The Shockers also had three players score four runs, tying the school record.

Jenni Brooks got the start in game one and threw four innings allowing four runs while just two of them were earned, receiving the win. Kelsey Sterneker threw the final three innings earning her third save of the season.

Wright got things going for the Shockers in the first with a one-out home run to left field. Hitz followed with a double, then Luellen hit a two-run home run to take a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, three straight hits from the Bears scored two runs and cut the lead to one, 3-2.

In the second inning, the Shockers added to their lead after Wright scored after a one-out walk.

Two more runs in the second inning by the Bears tied the game at four, heading into the third inning.
For the second time, the Shockers batted around in the third inning, with back-to-back home runs coming from Hitz and Luellen, to
take an 8-4 lead.

Again in the fourth, the Shockers batted around, scoring four more runs on hits from Hitz, Cacy Williams, Liz Broyles, and a home run from Mauriana Jamele for her first hit of her career.

Facing the run-rule, Missouri State scored two runs on a home run to cut the lead to six and extend the game.

For the fourth time in seven innings, Wichita State batted around in the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits, with a home run coming from Hitz for her second of the game. Sterneker finished the game, giving the Shockers a 17-6 win.

In game two, Katie Malone got the start, throwing all seven innings and receiving her ninth win of the season.

Cacy Williams collected two hits in game two, both coming on solo home runs. Hits also came from Luellen, Liz Broyles, Laurie Anne Derrico and three hits from Ashley Johnson.

Wichita State didn't get things going in the second game until the second inning when Luellen led off with a double and later scored to take a 1-0 lead.

In the third ining, the Bears scored to runs on just two hits and one walk to take their first lead of the day, 2-1.

Wichita State quickly tied the game in the top of the fourth on a home run from Williams.

In the sixth inning, Williams hit her second home run of the game to take a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the seventh, after allowing back-to-back two-out singles, Malone got a ground out to third base to win the game, 3-2.

Wichita State is now 25-18 overall and 11-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Shockers will be in action again on Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa against Drake at 12:00 p.m.
