th home run of her career, setting a new Wichita State record, as the Shockers swept MVC-leading Drake by scores of 9-1 and 9-0.
Jenni Brooks got the game one start, throwing all five innings and allowing just one run on four hits and receiving her 14
th win of the season.
Brittany Fortner got things going in the first inning, leading off the game with a solo home run over the right field wall.
In the bottom of the first, the Bulldogs tied the game at one after one-out walk came around to score on back-to-back singles.
Paige Luellen singled to begin the third and scored after
Cacy Williams hit her 36
th home run of her career to set a new Wichita State record.
In the fifth, the Shockers pushed the game out of reach with two walks to start the inning by Luellen and Williams, followed by a single from
Liz Broyles and a doubles by Laurie Anne Derrico and
Brittany Fortner, to make the score, 9-1.
Katie Malone got the start in game two throwing all seven innings and allowing six hits while striking out four Bulldogs, receiving her 10
th win of the season.
Again in the first inning, Wichita State took an early lead on a home run, this time, a two-run shot from
Paige Luellen to make the score 2-0.
After a scoreless second inning, Fortner led off the top of the third with a single. After stealing second base, Fortner scored on a double from
Mackenzie Wright. Hitz then doubled to left center to score Wright. After a passed ball got Hitz to third, Williams drove a fly ball to center field to score a run, making the score, 5-0.
In the bottom of the third Drake got runners on first and second with one out but after two fly-outs to centerfield, Malone escaped a jam, keeping the score, 5-0.
In the fourth, Laurie Anne Derrico led off with a double. After two straight outs, Fortner hit a double down the right field line and later came around to score after three straight walks to make the score 7-0 heading into the fifth inning.
Luellen got things started in the seventh with a walk. Derrico also reached base on an error and both came around to score on back-to-back singles from
Mauriana Jamele and
Ashley Johnson to win the game, 9-0.
Wichita State is now 27-18 overall and 13-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference and is currently tied for first place in the conference with Northern Iowa. The Shockers will be in action again tomorrow, finishing the three game series against Drake at 12:00 p.m.
