Fortner Sets Doubles Record As WSU Sweeps

WICHITA, Kan. – In the second annual Retinal Blindness Awareness game, senior Brittany Fortner set a new Wichita State record, collecting her 54th double of her career, as the Shockers swept the first day of games against Bradley by scores of 8-7 and 11-10.

Jenni Brooks got the start in game one, throwing 7.0 innings. Katie Malone entered the game but was unable to collect an out and Jenni Brooks re-entered and finished the game.

Liz Broyles led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 and driving in one run while also scoring a run. Paige Luellen and Kelli Spring also added multi-hit games.

Luellen got things going in the bottom of the second on a lead-off home run. Both teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Bradley's Katie Habryle hit her first home run of the game to tie the game at one.

Wichita State responded in the bottom half of the inning scoring two runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Braves got hot, scoring six runs on five hits with home runs from Maria Schroeder and Habryle to take a 7-3 lead.

The Shockers did not back down, scoring four runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth on three hits and one error to tie the game at 7.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Shockers got the bases loaded with no outs and Broyles drove a single into the left-center gap to walk-off, 8-7.

Kelsey Sterneker got the start in game two, throwing 0.2 innings. Ashlynne Neil entered the game with two outs in the first and threw 3.1 innings and allowed five runs but received the win for the Shockers. Jenni Brooks finished the game for Wichita State and collected her third save of the season.

The Braves jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning on five hits including a home run from Rachel Huggins.
In the bottom of the first, the Shockers were able to cut into the lead, scoring one run on a single from Cacy Williams to make the score, 4-1.

The Shockers added another run in the bottom of the third after Brittany Fortner led off with a double that set a new Wichita State record. Fortner's double was her 54th of her career breaking the Shocker record of 53 set by Britnee Barnett.

Bradley added three runs in the top of the fourth after Huggins hit her second home run of the game, making the score, 7-2.

Just like they had been all day, the Shockers found a way to make a comeback, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the fourth with hits coming from Laurie Anne Derrico, Macklin Hitz, Broyles, Ashley Johnson and a home run from Derrico to make the score, 11-7.

In the top of the fifth, the lead-off batter reached on an error. The next batter singled and both came around to score, to cut the lead to two, 11-9.

Brooks got into some trouble in the top of the seventh but after allowing one run, Brooks collected her fifth strikeout of the day to give Wichita State the 11-10 win.

Wichita State is now 23-18 overall and 9-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Shockers will be in action again tomorrow, playing the final game of a three-game series against Bradley at 12:00 p.m.
