Shockers Drop Two Games at No. 18 Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Wichita State softball team traveled to No. 18 Missouri on Wednesday and lost two games by scores of, 11-0 and 9-2.

Jenni Brooks got her 14th start of the season in game one, throwing one inning and allowing four runs. Kelsey Sterneker entered the game in the second inning with no outs and pitched three full innings giving up six earned runs on seven hits. Brooks received the loss, pushing her record to 11-6 on the season.

Macklin Hitz went two-for-two on the day while Brittany Fortner, Cacy Williams and Kelli Spring also collected a hit.

Missouri took the early lead in the second inning off a two-run home run from Kirsten Mack to make the score, 2-0. After two walks, the Tigers continued their strong second inning adding four more runs on three more hits to push their lead to 6-0, heading into the
third inning.

Again in the third, the Tigers were able to push the game out of reach with five runs on four hits, two of which were home runs.
In the top of the fifth inning, Brittany Fortner hit her 53rd double of her career to tie Britnee Barnett for the Wichita State all-time doubles record.

The Shockers were unable to scratch across any runs in the fifth and lost by a score of 11-0 in five innings.

Katie Malone started game two for the Shockers, and threw three innings and gave up six runs. Ashlynne Neil finished the game, throwing three innings and gave up three runs.

Missouri was able to break open the scoring in the first inning, reaching on a single and then scoring from first on a double to right-center.

After collecting two quick outs in the bottom of the second, a walk got the inning started for the Tigers. Missouri then collected four straight hits to score four runs and push their lead to 5-0.

The Tigers led off the third with a solo home run but were held scoreless for the rest of the inning, making the score, 6-0 heading into the fourth inning.

The Shockers scored their first runs of the day after Liz Broyles led off the fourth with a single, Cacy Williams hit her eighth home run of the season to cut the Tigers' lead to four, 6-2.

Missouri added two runs in the fourth inning and one more in the sixth to get the 9-2 victory in game two.

Wichita State is now 21-18 overall and stay at 7-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Shockers will continue MVC play this weekend as they host Bradley in a three game series beginning on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
