Box Score (PDF)EVANSVILLE, Ind. – All three games of the weekend were decided by one run, as the Wichita State fell to Evansville in the final game, 3-2 on Sunday.
Jenni Brooks got her second start of the weekend, throwing 4.0 innings and giving up seven hits and three runs while striking out two.
Kelsey Sterneker entered the game in the fifth and threw two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Macklin Hitz led the Shockers offensively with a home run and a sacrifice fly to collect two RBI.
Brittany Fortner and
Mackenzie Wright also added two hits apiece.
To begin the game, Hitz gave the Shockers a quick lead on a solo home run over the right field wall to give the Shockers a 1-0 lead, going into the bottom half of the first.
Wichita State's lead was quickly erased after back-to-back singles by the Purple Aces plated a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one.
In the top of the third inning,
Kelli Spring led off with a walk and after a single from Fortner, later scored on a sacrifice fly from Hitz.
To begin the bottom of the fourth, Brooks walked the leadoff hitter. After a single and a sacrifice bunt, Susan Norris doubled to centerfield to bring in one run and tie the game at two. Another single drove in one more run to give Evansville its first lead of the game, 3-2.
Both teams remained scoreless for the rest of the game losing the final game of the series, 3-2 and losing the series, 2-1.
Wichita State is now 21-16 overall and 7-5 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Shockers will be in action again on Wednesday in Columbia, Mo., taking on the Missouri Tigers in a double header beginning at 4 p.m.
