Box Score (PDF)LINCOLN, Neb. – After splitting day one, the Wichita State softball team fell to No. 23 Nebraska, 10-5, in the third and final game of the series on Sunday, March 6.
The Shockers had three pitchers throw in the game, with
Ashlynne Neil receiving the loss in the circle to make her season record, 1-1.
Offensively, the Shockers collected four hits as a team with
Brittany Fortner,
Cacy Williams,
Macklin Hitz and
Ashley Johnson all collecting one hit apiece.
Wichita State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as
Kelli Spring led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and was later drove in on a single by
Brittany Fortner. Fortner was later scored on a single by
Cacy Williams.
Nebraska responded in the bottom half of the first, scoring four runs on four hits and taking a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, MJ Knighten of Nebraska hit her third home run of the weekend with a runner on, pushing the lead to 6-2 at the end of two innings.
To start the top of the third inning, Fortner led off with a walk and later came around to score.
Liz Broyles and
Cacy Williams also reached base and came around to score for the Shockers, to cut the Nebraska lead to 6-5.
In the bottom half of the third, the Huskers added two more runs off a solo home run and a double to push the lead to 8-5.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Huskers added one run in the bottom of the fifth off a solo home run and one more in the bottom of the sixth to win the game, 10-5.
Wichita State is now 9-8 on the season and will be in action again on Wed., March 9, as the Shockers travel to Stillwater, Okla., to take on Oklahoma State at 6:30 p.m.
