Game 2 Box Score (PDF)LINCOLN, Neb. – The Wichita State softball team split the first two games of their three game series with No. 23 Nebraska. The Shockers lost game one on a walk-off homerun, 6-4, but were able to battle and defeat the Huskers in game two, 2-1.
In game one of the day, the Shockers were led offensively by
Paige Luellen who had two hits in three at-bats and also drove in one run for the Shockers. In the circle,
Katie Malone pitched all six innings for Wichita State.
Wichita State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after
Kelli Spring led off the game with a hit-by-pitch and was later drove in by
Brittany Fortner. Fortner also scored in the inning off a single by Luellen.
Nebraska came back in the bottom of the first, scoring one run to make the score 2-1.
Wichita State was able to add one more run in the top of the second and one in the top of the third, while holding the Huskers scoreless.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Nebraska added one run, on a solo homerun to left-center to make the score 4-2.
After a scoreless top of the fifth, the Huskers added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth off a two-run homerun to tie the game, 4-4.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Huskers won the game, 6-4, on a two-run walk-off homerun.
In game two,
Jenni Brooks got the start in the circle for the Shockers and pitched a fantastic game, throwing all seven innings and only giving up one run.
Offensively, the Shockers were led again by Luellen who had a team-high two hits and drove in one run, while also drawing one walk.
Both teams were scoreless in game two until the top of the fourth when Luellen got things started with a one out double and later came around to score on a single by
Liz Broyles.
Again in the sixth inning, Luellen got things started for the Shockers, driving the first pitch of the inning over the centerfield wall to make the score 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Huskers were able to score one run, to cut the lead to 2-1.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Nebraska was threatening with a runner on first, but
Mackenzie Wright made a diving play down the third base line and made a tremendous throw from her knees to get the runner at first to win the game, 2-1.
The Shockers are now 9-7 overall and will be in action again tomorrow as they finish their three game series against No. 23 Nebraska at 1:00 p.m.
