Box Score (PDF)LAWRENCE, Kan. – A five run eighth inning helped the Shockers defeat the Kansas Jayhawks Tuesday night, 6-1.
Offensively, the Shockers collected 13 hits in the game with
Brittany Fortner,
Macklin Hitz,
Cacy Williams,
Mackenzie Wright and
Ashley Johnson all with multiple hits in the game.
In the circle,
Kelsey Sterneker threw three strong innings, only allowing four hits and one run.
Jenni Brooks entered the game in the fourth inning and shut down the Jayhawks giving up just two hits for her third game in a row and receiving the win to push her record to 9-3.
After both teams were scoreless in the first inning of play. In the bottom of the second Jessie Roane hit a solo home run over the leftfield wall to give the Jayhawks an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Jayhawks had back-to-back batters reach base.
Jenni Brooks came in to pitch and walked her first batter to load the bases with no outs. Brooks buckled down and recorded three straight outs to leave the bases loaded and leave the score at 1-0.
Laurie Anne Derrico reached base on a hit-by-pitch with one out in the top of the fifth inning. After a back-to-back singles from
Ashley Johnson and
Brittany Fortner,
Kelli Spring grounded out to second base but Derrico was able to score to tie the game at one.
After two scoreless innings pitched by Brooks and Andie Formby, the game went to extra innings. Hitz got things going with one out single followed by a single by Williams and a double by Wright to give the Shockers a 3-1 lead. Then with runners on second and first, Derrico crushed a three-run home run over the left-centerfield wall to push the Shockers lead to 6-1.
Brooks sat down the Jayhawks in order in the bottom of the eighth to give Wichita State a 6-1 victory.
Wichita State is now 16-12 overall and remains 4-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Shockers will be in action again tomorrow at 6:00 p.m., against Tulsa in Wichita, Kan.
