Box Score (PDF)WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State softball team took down Tulsa, who was receiving votes, by a score of 11-3. The Shockers hit five home runs in the game, this being the most home runs hit in a single game against an NCAA opponent in Shocker history.
For the second straight night,
Kelsey Sterneker got the start in the circle and threw two innings.
Katie Malone entered the game in the third with two runners on with no outs. Malone pitched three solid innings allowing just two hits and zero runs.
Offensively, Wichita State had six players collect hits in the game with multiple hits coming from
Mackenzie Wright,
Macklin Hitz and
Paige Luellen. Both Hitz and Luellen had two home runs on the day.
Wichita State got things rolling early after
Brittany Fortner reached base on an error by the shortstop which moved Fortner all the way to third base. After two consecutive outs, Hitz hit her first home run of the day to make the score 2-0.
In the top of the second inning, the Golden Hurricane tied the score at two on a two-run home run by Tori Stafford.
In the third inning Tulsa took their first and only lead of the game after three straight hits to start the inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Shockers regained the lead on a two run home run by Wright to take a 4-3 lead.
Wichita State's power was not done yet, with Luellen also adding a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Golden Hurricane were threatening with runners on first and second with two outs. On a single into centerfield,
Ashley Johnson threw a perfect throw to catcher
Cassidy Kelsheimer to tag the runner out at home and keep the score at 5-3.
The Shockers then carried their momentum into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Kelli Spring started the inning off reaching base on a bunt single, followed by three more singles from Fortner, Wright and Williams. Hitz and Luellen then hit back-to-back home runs to give Wichita State the run-rule victory over the Golden Hurricane.
Wichita State is now 18-12 overall and 4-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Shockers will be in action again this weekend as the team hits the road to take on Illinois State in a three game series beginning Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
