Box Score (PDF)LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Wichita State softball team began its weekend with a 13-2 run-rule, defeating San Jose State in the Demarini Desert Classic.
Offensively, the Shockers had 14 hits with
Mackenzie Wright and
Kelli Spring both collecting three each.
Liz Broyles and
Paige Luellen also added three RBIs each.
Kelsey Sterneker got the win for the Shockers throwing four innings and giving up one run.
Both teams got off to a slow start until a solo homerun by
Cassidy Kelsheimer gave the Shockers an early 1-0 lead. In the third inning, the Spartans came back and tied the game at one.
In the bottom of the fourth, after a walk by
Macklin Hitz, Broyles hit a two run homerun and gave the Shockers a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
The top of the fifth was the biggest inning for the Shockers bringing eleven batters to the plate and scoring six runs on six hits.
San Jose State was able to score one more run in the bottom of the fifth but the Shockers quickly scored four more runs in the top of the sixth and gave the Shockers a 13-2 victory in six innings.
Wichita State is now 3-3 on the season and will play again tonight at 6:00 p.m. against Hawaii.
