LINCOLN, Neb. -- Wichita State's Rebekah Topham and Kyle Larkin were the top university finishers at the 26th Annual Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational Saturday morning on the Pioneers Park course.
Four Shocker men and four Shocker women completed the course as individuals and did not compete in the team competition as was planned prior to the meet.
Topham won her second university race in as many tries with a time of 22:09.0 in the 6K women's race. Two weeks ago she won the J.K. Gold Classic women's university race at R.A.F.T. Course near Augusta, Kan.
"Rebekah and Kayla Deighan really impressed me," said Head Coach Kirk Hunter. "Rebekah showed poise in a highly competitive race of distance runners and against a very talented Iowa Central runner who won the overall race. Kayla ran the best she has in Nebraska and showed maturity and that her summer training program is paying off. She is stronger than in the past and we hope it is a springboard to the rest of the season."
Deighan finished seventh in the university race with a time of 22:47.9, while Paige Wells finished 56th overall in a time of 24:01.1. Freshman Deidra Walker finished 62nd overall in a time of 24:07.3.
On the men's side, Larkin won the men's 8K race in a time of 25:29.9 on Saturday, while Reno Law was 11th overall with a time of 25:52.6.
"Both Kyle and Reno were patient today," Hunter said. "Kyle was about 15th at the 1K mark and worked his way back the front. Reno was in the 30s at the same mark, and also was patient and worked his way back which is what you have to do on that course. Runners were falling off and we were passing them and running smart. I am pround of them both and especially Reno since it is his first 8K."Also on the men's side,
Zack Penrod finished 59th and Stan Skwarlo was 75th with times of 27:01.2 and 27:15.6.
"Stan ran two minutes better than last year, so I was proud of his effort," Hunter said. "Zack had some breathing problems so that made it really difficult for him today."
Nebraska won the men's team competition, while Creighton came out on top of the women's race.
"I was really proud of all of our performances today and hope that they are a springboard for the rest of the year," Hunter said.
