Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – No. 25 Texas scored four runs in the first two innings and held on to defeat Wichita State 6-4.
Ryan Tinkham went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a home run, while Gunnar Troutwine went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Starter Chase Williams took the loss. He went three innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Texas jumped on the board in the bottom of the first. Joe Baker led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Brooks Marlow bunted him to third and he reached on an error and Ben Johnson drove in Baker with a fielder's choice. After a walk to Tres Barrera, CJ Hinojosa doubled to left field to drive in Johnson to give the Longhorns a 2-0 lead.
The Shockers cut into the lead in the fourth. With one out, Ryan Tinkham singled and moved to second on a walk to Sam Hilliard. With two outs, Gunnar Troutwine doubled to right-center to score both to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Longhorns answered in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Zane Gurwitz walked and moved to third on a single from Baker. Gurwitz scored on a single from Marlow to give UT a 5-2 lead.
Daniel Kihle was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth and Tinkham followed with a home run to left field to cut the lead to 5-4.
UT added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Michael Cantu led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. An error put runners at the corners and with two outs, Baker singled up the middle to score Cantu for a 6-4 lead.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., April 10 against Illinois State at 6:30 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
