Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – Freshman Gunnar Troutwine hit two home runs for Wichita State, but it was not enough as Illinois State defeated the Shockers 10-8 in game two of a three-game series.
Troutwine finished 4-for-5 with five RBI, while Sam Hilliard went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a double.
Isaac Anderson pitched five innings and gave up fur runs on five hits with no walks and a career-high eight strikeouts.
Jacob Hendren started for the Redbirds and got the win. He pitched six innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. Ryan Koziol got the save, after only facing two batters in the ninth.
WSU got on the board first, courtesy of a home run from the designated hitter Gunnar Troutwine. His second inning solo shot was the first of his career. After two innings, WSU led 1–0.
In the fourth inning, the Redbirds took the lead. With one out, Jared Hendren hit a double then a hit by pitch brought Ryan Koziol to the plate. He hit a ball to right field that bounced over the fence to score a run and put runners on second and third. Joe Kelch then came up with two outs and hit a two-run single to left to give them the lead. In total ILS scored three runs in the inning.
The Shockers answered back in the bottom half of the inning courtesy of a second home run from Troutwine. Hilliard led off with a single up the middle then Troutwine homered to tie the game up at three a piece.
ILS kept the home run parade going in the top of the fifth with a solo home run of their own. Dennis Colon's shot was the only hit of the inning and gave the Redbirds a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Reagan Biechler was the first pitcher called out of the pen and he faced three batters, the first two batters walked then he gave up a single to score one run. Taylor Goshen was then called into the game. The first batter he faced lined a ball into left, but Mikel Mucha made a great catch to get the first out of the inning. The Redbirds continued to score with a single and a balk to bring the total to three runs in the inning and give them a 7–3 lead.
The Shockers chipped into the deficit in the bottom half of the sixth scoring Ryan Tinkham on a sacrifice fly from Mucha. After six complete the Shockers trailed 7–4.
The Redbirds answered right back in the top of the seventh. With Goshen still on the mound, Mason Snyder hit a two-run home run, leading the Shockers to make another pitching change. Chandler Sanburn was then called into the game to pitch; he got the first two batters out before giving up a home run to Joe Kelch, increasing their lead to 10–4.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Shockers were able to score one more run. WSU got three singles with only one out then Taylor Sanagorski pinch-hit and walked to score the only run of the inning, 10–5.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Shockers tried to rally with two outs. Daniel Kihle walked, Tinkham got hit for the second time in the game then Hilliard doubled to score one run. Troutwine continued his career day hitting a single up the middle that scored two runs. Zach Reding then grounded out to bring the comeback to a halt.
The two teams wrap up the series on Sun., April 12 at 1 p.m.
