WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State softball student-athletes Liz Broyles (second baseman) and Katie Malone (pitcher) each won Missouri Valley Conference weekly awards, the Valley announced on Monday. As Broyles was named MVC Softball Player of the Week for the first time in her career, Malone was named MVC Softball Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career.
Broyles hit .462 (6-13) at the Long Beach State Louisville Slugger Tournament to lead the Shocker offense. As Broyles hit .462 this past weekend, she scored two runs, hit one double, had three RBI (tied for the team lead), seven total bases (led the team), a .538 slugging percentage (led the team), two walks (tied for the team lead), and had a .529 on-base percentage (led the team).
Malone went 3-1 in four appearances at the Long Beach State Louisville Slugger Tournament. The Crete, Neb. native had a 2.47 ERA over 22.2 innings pitched, gave up 15 runs (eight earned) on 26 hits, walking six and striking out 15. During the game against Utah Valley on Saturday, Malone pitched a complete game in relief, picking up the win. She allowed just one earned run on five hits, walked one and struck out six.
On the year, Broyles is tied for the team lead in batting average (.362), with five runs scored, 17 hits, four doubles, a home run, and 11 RBI (tied for second on the team). The Blanchard, Okla. native also has 24 total bases, a .511 slugging percentage (second on the team), three walks, and a .426 on-base percentage (second on the team).
Malone is 5-4 with a 4.04 ERA in 13 appearances (10 starts) while throwing 62.1 innings so far in 2015. She has five complete games, one save, allowed 46 runs (36 earned) on 83 hits, walked 17 and has struck out 43.
Wichita State begins their 2015 home schedule when they face South Dakota at 5 p.m. inside Wilkins Stadium as the opening game the Wichita State Softball Tournament.
