3/15/2015 4:26:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State's softball team won their series finale against Indiana State on Sunday afternoon inside Wilkins Stadium by a score of 6-2. With the win, the Shockers move to 16-11 (1-2 MVC) as the Sycamores dropped to 6-13 (2-1 MVC).

Katie Malone picked up her ninth win of the season by pitching her ninth complete game. The Crete, Neb. native allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits, walked three and struck out six. As Malone's 2015 innings total crossed the 100 inning mark when she recorded the second out in the top of the sixth, she also now has 71 strikeouts on the year.

Taylor Lockwood took her sixth loss of the season for Indiana State. She pitched 0.2 innings and allowed five runs (none earned) on four hits, walked none and struck out none.

Melanie Jaegers went 2-3 with a home run (her fourth), three RBI, and a run scored. The Mesquite, Texas native also shined behind the plate, as she caught two Sycamore baserunners from stealing second.

Abby Klopp was 2-3 with a two run home run, two RBI and a run scored to pace the Sycamores.

Wichita State scored five runs on four hits with two outs in the bottom of the first, after an error by Indiana State's Kassie Brown at shortstop allowed Liz Broyles to reach base, and Brittany Fortner to advance to third. The next three batters all produced RBI.

Cacy Williams began the Shocker rally in the bottom of the first when she doubled, scoring Fortner while advancing Broyles to third. Erin Carney then singled to right center, scoring both Williams and Broyles to push their lead to 3-0. The Jaegers two-run home run capped the offensive scoring, as the Shocks took their 5-0 lead into the top of the second.

The Sycamores answered the Shockers' five run bottom of the first with a Klopp two-run home run, closing the Shocker lead to 5-2 after the top of the second.

Through the next four innings, Malone and Yvette Alvarez (who pitched in relief of Lockwood beginning in the bottom of the first) combined to allow just two hits—one Wichita State hit in the bottom of the fifth, and one Indiana State hit in the top of the third. As the score was 5-2 in favor of the Shocker during this stretch of the game, a pitcher's duel occurred.

Jaegers doubled to left field, scoring Williams to increase the Shocker lead to 6-2 during the bottom of the sixth, as she collected her third RBI of the game. With two outs, the bases were loaded while Kelli Spring was at the plate, but she grounded out to Klopp (who came in to pitch in relief of Alvarez) to end the Shocker rally. Wichita State took their 6-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

The Sycamores put the tying run at the plate, Ashley Dickerson, with two outs and the bases loaded during the top of the seventh. Malone forced Dickerson to pop out to Carney to end the game and give the Shockers their first MVC win of the season, 6-2 over Indiana State.

Wichita State will play against sixth-ranked Oklahoma on Tuesday evening inside Wilkins Stadium at 6 p.m. This game was originally scheduled for March 4 in Wichita, but was postponed to Tuesday evening due to inclement weather.
