Quickly...Wichita State (1-6) plays host to Eastern Washington (5-4) in the return trip of the two-year home-and-home series.
-The Shockers are coming off a 58-51 loss to No.16/15 Tennessee on Friday. WSU was led in scoring by
Diamond Lockhart and
TaQuandra Mike's 11 points.
-
Rangie Bessard made her WSU debut after sitting out the last two semesters and made an immediate impact with nine points, three rebounds, five steals, two blocks and an assist in 35 minutes.
-After playing just one home game in November, WSU is in a five-game home stretch and plays just one game on the road in December, a Dec. 22 date at Tennessee Tech.
-WSU is led in scoring by freshman
Jyar Francis, who averages 12.7 points a game off the bench, but missed the Tennessee game with a concussion. The next-leading scorer is
TaQuandra Mike, who averages 10.4 points a game.
-The Shockers returned five players from last year's NCAA Tournament team, including three who came off the bench for WSU. Junior guard
Jaleesa Chapel returned with the most experience, having played in 63 games with two starts the previous two years.
-Seven Shockers will suit up against the Eagles. Freshman
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage has not been released to play after knee surgery prior to her arrival at WSU, Francis is out with a concussion and junior
Brittany Martin is also out with injury.
-WSU won its first of two exhibitions, 68-61, on Nov. 8 led by
Jyar Francis' 21 points. WSU also plays a second exhibition Dec. 29.
On EWU... Eastern Washington (5-4) is on a two-game win streak after wins agianst Utah Valley in Cheney (68-64) and at Cal State Fullerton on the road (68-57). The Eagles are coached by Wendy Schuller, who is 203-223 in 15 years at EWU.
The two teams have a common opponent in Creighton, which the Shockers lost to on Nov. 13, 79-54, in the season opener and EWU lost to, 66-60, on Nov. 28.
Hayley Hodgins leads EWU with 19.4 points a game. She had 30 points a year ago when the Eagles defeated WSU. Her sister, Delaney, is a sophomore and averages a team-second 14.7 points a game.
Series History... WSU and Eastern Washington meet for the second time in women's basketball. EWU won the first meeting, 86-58, on Nov18, 2015, in Cheney, Washington.
Michaela Dapprich had 21 points and
Alex Harden had 14,but the Shockers couldn't overcome an early deficit that was 43-18 at the half. EWU shot 48 percent and Hayley Hodgins had 30 points for the win.
Last Meeting...On Nov. 18, 2014, Wichita State could not overcome an early deficit and 48 percent shooting by Eastern Washington as the Shockers dropped to 1-1 with a 86-58 loss in their first road test of the season.
Junior
Michaela Dapprich led the Shockers in scoring with 21 points, one short of her career-high, while
Alex Harden backed her with 14. Dapprich picked up a double-double with 10 rebounds, a career-high.
Hayley Hodgins led EWU with 30 points, while Lexie Nelson followed with 29 as the Eagles shot 48.4 percent (30-62) from the field.
On Jody Adams... Adams (Tennessee, '94) is in her eighth season at Wichita State as the only Shocker women's basketball coach to make an NCAA appearance and win an MVC regular-season and MVC Tournament championship at WSU. Her 2012-13 team accomplished all of that, then the 2013-14 and 2014-15 teams repeated the exact same feat. WSU has won three-straight MVC regular-season and MVC Tournament titles and competing in three-straight NCAA Tournaments.
At 29-5 overall, the 2014-15 team broke the school's season win record by three games.
She is 147-86 in her eighth season at WSU and 171-96 overall in her ninth season as a head coach, which includes a 24-8 record as head coach at Murray State in 2007-08.
In addition, WSU is 88-26 (.785) overall at home under Adams, including 16-0 in 2014-15.
Adams is first on the WSU all-time wins list. She passed Linda Hargrove, who won 113 games at WSU from 1989-98, on Fri., Feb. 21, 2014 in a win against Illinois State.
WSU's Opponents Keep Winning...Five of Wichita State's seven opponents to date are .500 or better, including Missouri, which is a perfect 10-0, Richmond (6-3) and Arkansas State (5-2). Tennessee (7-2), is ranked to No. 16.
Third Newcomer of the Week... Wichita State sophomore transfer
Diamond Lockhart was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, it was announced Monday. She is the third Shocker this season to be honored with the weekly award.
Lockhart, a 5-foot-5 guard from Red Oak, Texas, led the Shockers in their lone game last week, tallying a career-high 21 points on 8-of-14 (57-percent) shooting against Southeast Missouri. Lockhart also had two assists and four rebounds while she also made 50 percent (3-of-6) of her three-point attempts.
Six StrongWichita State has suited up just six players the last four games, meaning a lot of minutes played for several Shockers. Junior guard
Jaleesa Chapel leads the nation in minutes played per game, averaging 39.4 minutes. Sophomores
Aundra Stovall (37.1 minutes/game) and
Diamond Lockhart (36.6 minutes/ game) also rank in the top five in the league in minutes played. The Shocker roster is slim right now since freshman

Last Time Out...Wichita State fell to the No. 15/16 Tennessee Lady Volunteers, 58-51, Friday night at Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers out-shot the Lady Volunteers, shooting 39.6 percent from the field, while Tennessee shot 38.9 percent. The Shockers were outrebounded, 37-29, but had 13 steals while Tennessee had just nine. Wichita State was led by both
TaQuandra Mike and
Diamond Lockhart who both had 11 points. Both Mike and
Jaleesa Chapel also contributed six rebounds. Tennessee was led by Bashaara Graves who had 18 points and 13 rebounds. Andraya Carter also contributed 14 points, going 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Top-10 Attendance... Wichita State's annual "Schoolhouse Rocks with the Shocks" game against Southeast Missouri brought in 8,474 local elementary kids and was the ninth-largest crowd in Wichita State women's basketball history. The school record for attendance is 10,612, set on Feb. 25, 2001, in a game against Missouri State.
Next Up... Wichita State plays host to the Shocker Winter Classic, Dec. 18 and 19, inside Charles Koch Arena. North Dakota State and Wichita State face North Carolina A&T and Prairie View A&M on consecutive days, but do not play each other.
