TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Cacy Williams hit .375 (3-for-4), including a home run in the fifth to lift the Wichita State softball team past the Indiana State Sycamores, 3-2, at Price Field Friday afternoon.
Melanie Jaegers hit a single to third, stealing second shortly after before Ali Vandever hit a RBI single up the middle to give the Shockers an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Kelli Spring and Williams kept things going for Wichita State, hitting back-to-back singles to right field and left field, respectively to put the Shockers ahead, 2-0.
Indiana State cut into the Wichita State lead, 1-2, in the third inning with a fielder's choice to center field, scoring the runner at third but Melanie Jaegers threw out the runner at third shortly after to get the Shockers out of the inning.
The Sycamores tied the game, 2-2, with a home run to left field in the fourth inning but Williams responded with a shot to center field to put the Shockers back on top, 3-2 in the fifth.
The Wichita State defense stepped up in the top of the sixth, throwing out two Indiana State runners at home after the Sycamores loaded the bases with no outs. Katie Malone retired the next batter to get the Shockers out of the inning, maintaining the lead heading into the seventh.
Sloan Anderson (7-9) picked up the win for Wichita State, allowing five hits and two runs in four innings pitched, while Katie Malone was recorded with the save, pitching three innings and striking out one.
The Shockers will wrap up the three-game series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
