ST. CHARLES, Mo.- The Wichita State women's basketball team captured its second-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship, defeating Drake 73-49 on Sunday afternoon inside Family Arena.
Alex Harden scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out eight assists. Jamillah Bonner scored 21 points, while Alie Decker and Michelle Price also scored in double-figures, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Harden, Bonner and Price were all selected to the 2014 MVC All-Tournament Team with Harden being named the most outstanding player of the tournament.
Harden started the scoring for Wichita State with a pull-up jumper at the free-throw line and Michaela Dapprich hit a two-point jumper of her own to give the Shockers an early 4-0 advantage at the 18:10 mark.
Drake tied the game at six, before Wichita State rattled-off six consecutive points using an Alie Decker three-pointer and a Harden old-fashioned three-point play with 13:34 remaining in the first half to put the Shockers up 12-7.
Harden connected on back-to-back jumpers, the last at the 10:49 mark to keep the Wichita State lead at five, 18-13.
Two minutes later, the Shockers went on a 9-0 run, started by another jumper from Harden and capped with a Price three-point play with 5:49 remaining in the half to give Wichita State a 33-22 lead. Over the final five minutes of the half, Wichita State outscored Drake 12-6 to take a 45-28 lead into the locker room.
Harden led all scorers through the first 20 minutes with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while grabbing four rebounds and handing out six assists. Decker added 10 points, going 2-for-3 from behind the arc. Wichita State shot 19-for-33 (.576) from the floor and scored 15 points off 12 Bulldog turnovers. The Shocker bench also won the scoring battle 12-2.
Wichita State's hot shooting continued in the second half, as it went on an early 6-0 run capped by a Bonner jumper in the paint to go up 21, 53-32, with 16:48 remaining in the game.
The Shockers continued to pour it on, as Michelle Price nailed a jumper in the paint at the 5:49 mark to put Wichita State up 73-47, which was the last bucket until Drake hit a basket with just six second left and the Shockers won 73-49.
Wichita State shot 31-for-64 (.484) from the floor for the game and held Drake to 19-for-49 (.388) shooting. The Shockers out-scored the Bulldogs in the paint 32-24 and scored 21 points off 22 Drake turnovers.
With the win, Wichita State will now head to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. The Shockers will learn their seeding on Monday during the NCAA Selection Show which begins at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
