CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- Despite Alex Harden's career-high 31 points, the Wichita State women's basketball team fell to Northern Iowa, 80-71, on Sunday afternoon inside the McLeod Center, ending its program-best 20-game winning streak.
Harden shot 8-for-18 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc, while connecting on 11-of-13 free throws. Kelsey Jacobs added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Northern Iowa opened the game on a 9-1 run, before Jamillah Bonner hit the first field goal of the game for Wichita State at the 15:15 mark to cut the Panther lead to 9-3. After UNI went up by ten, Michelle Price connected on a layup to get the deficit down to single digits, 14-6, with 13:22 remaining in the first half.
A two-point jumper from the Panthers at the 5:22 mark put them up 15 and forced the Shockers to take a timeout. Wichita State then scored six consecutive points, all from the free-throw line to get the lead back down to nine, 32-23, at the 3:45 mark.
The Shockers continued to whittle away at the Panther lead, getting it down to seven, 41-34, at the break. Wichita State shot 9-for-17 (.529) in the first 20 minutes and 16-for-20 (.800) from the free-throw line.
Bonner opened the second half with a jumper that got the Northern Iowa lead down to 41-36 with 19:39 remaining in the game, but the Panthers fired back by scoring six consecutive points to get their lead back to double-digits.
Wichita State continued to fight, as Harden's three-pointer at the 12:20 mark put the Shockers down three, 51-48. Another Northern Iowa run put the lead back up to 10, until Harden hit another three-pointer to try and keep her team in the game that cut the lead down to 59-52 with 8:18 remaining in the game.
The Panthers continued to answer the Shockers down the stretch and went on to win 80-71.
The Shockers will now return home to Charles Koch Arena for two games. They will take on Illinois State on Fri., Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. and Indiana State on Sun., Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.
