SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Wichita State softball team lost a pair of games Saturday in San Antonio, Texas at the UTSA Classic. The Shockers fell to Oklahoma State 9-2 Saturday morning before falling to Colorado State 8-3 Saturday afternoon.
Danielle Riddle hit a two-run double to left center in the top of the first to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead in the early going. Cacy Williams responded in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run to center field to tie the game, 2-2.
Oklahoma State hit a slew of singles in the top of the second, scoring three runs to give the Cowgirls a 5-2 advantage. A Wichita State error advanced a runner to third base in the third, loading the bases for Oklahoma State and eventually scoring a run on a groundout to second, extending the Cowgirl lead, 6-2.
Oklahoma State scored three runs in the seventh but Wichita State couldn't respond and the Cowgirls took the first game from the Shockers, 9-2.
Katie Malone (1-1) recorded the loss for Wichita State after pitching six innings, striking out six and allowing 11 hits and eight runs. Williams hit .500 in the game, going 1-for-2 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs.
Against Colorado State the Shockers fell into an early deficit, giving up a run in the opening inning off a ground out to second. The Rams added another run in the fourth inning, scoring on a fly out to right field to give Colorado State a 2-0 advantage.
Macklin Hitz reached on a fielder's choice, advancing to second on a dropped ball by the first baseman to put the Shockers in scoring position in the fifth inning. Ali Vandever hit a triple to right field to score Hitz, cutting the Rams lead, 2-1. Colorado State responded in the bottom of the inning on a RBI double to left center, however, taking a 3-1 lead into the sixth.
Chelsea O'Connor hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to give Colorado State an 8-1 lead over Wichita State.
Cacy Williams' inning-opening single to right field started the Wichita State's strongest comeback bid of the game in the top of the seventh inning. Williams reached third on an error by the right fielder before Paige Mason hit a two RBI home run to left field to cut the Colorado State lead, 8-3, but it wasn't enough and the Shockers dropped the final game of the UTSA Classic.
Sloan Anderson picked up the loss for the Shockers, pitching 5.2 innings with two strikeouts, three walks, eight hits and seven runs before Hunter Stohlmeyer relieved Anderson for the final inning.
The Shockers will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for the Unconquered Classic Fri., Feb. 21. Wichita State will take on UCSB at 2 p.m. before playing Charleston Southern at 6:30 p.m. The Shockers are scheduled to play tournament host Florida State at 1:30 p.m. Sat., Feb. 22 and Florida A&M immediately following at 3:45 before finishing out the tournament against Charleston Southern Sun., Feb. 23 at 9 a.m.
