Kevin Larsen, the tournament MVP for GW, finished with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. The 6-foot-10 junior from Denmark also helped limit the Shockers interior attack, holding the Shockers to a season-low 18 points in the paint (14 below their average).

The Shockers looked sharp early on, using an 8-0 run to stake their first lead. VanVleet and Tekele Cotton provided much of the spark.

VanVleet knocked down back-to-back threes then forced a steal that set up Cotton for a transition jam. Cotton followed with a steal of his own and a layup to give WSU a 10-4 advantage less than six minutes in.

WSU's defense continued to produce offense. Cotton and Carter teamed up for another strip, and Cotton raced ahead for another uncontested dunk. With help from eight GW turnovers in the first 10 minutes, the Shockers pushed their lead to 16-9.

Cotton went to the bench with his second foul at the 11:05 mark, and GW capitalized with five quick points to make it a one-possession game.

The Colonials tied it at 17 at the 7:35 mark on a Patricio Garino three-pointer and regained the lead a minute later with a free throw.

The lead changed hands five times over the next three minutes. Rauno Nurger muscled in a shot from underneath, then drained a trey moments later.

GW stormed back after each of those makes with big baskets, but WSU volleyed back.

With the Shockers trailing 23-22, Zach Brown hit two straight three-pointers for a 28-25 Shocker advantage with 2:52 to go in the half.

GW answered with the last of four straight three-pointers, this one by Nick Griffin, to knot it at 28 with 2:33 remaining, and the score held into halftime.

The Colonials hit 11-of-19 shots in the first half, including five of their seven attempts from three-point range. That hot shooting helped them overcome 10 turnovers. WSU scored 12 of its 28 first-half points off of GW miscues.

GW kept WSU's starting frontcourt of Kelly and Carter in check. The pair combined to go 0-for-6 from the field in the first half with just two rebounds.

The game stayed tight into the second half. VanVleet, Baker and Ria'n Holland knocked down threes for WSU, as the Shockers briefly gapped the Colonials 39-34 with 12:45 remaining in the game.

Holland was just getting warmed up. The redshirt freshman ripped down an offensive rebound then settled in the corner for a return pass and another three-pointer with 10:20 to go.

Less than 40 seconds later, Holland drained his third-straight from beyond the arc to up the WSU edge to 45-37.

GW finished out a 7-0 run with a Yuta Watanabe three to grab a 54-52 lead with 3:32 on the clock.

WSU slapped on the press over the final three minutes with mixed results. GW broke through on the first go-around, and Larsen connected on a crucial three for a 57-52 margin with 2:49 left.

The Shockers succeeded in forcing back-to-back GW turnovers with the press over the next minute but couldn't capitalize offensively. Joe McDonald drove and scored for a seven-point lead with 1:02 remaining.
