FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Wichita State doubles team of Tomislav Gregurovic and Tin Ostojic came up short in their Thursday quarterfinal match at the USTA/ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, falling 7-6(4), 6-3 to the Illinois team of Ross Guigon and Tim Kopinski.
Gregurovic and Ostojic built a 4-1 lead in the opening set but couldn't hang on. Guigon and Kopinski rallied to win the set in a tiebreaker, then carried that momentum over to the second.
“We played some incredible tennis. It could have gone either way. We could have won that match and a couple more,” said WSU coach Brad Louderback. “It was just a great tournament and a great experience. I was really proud of the guys.”
Gregurovic and Ostojic won a pair of Wednesday matches over elite competition but finished three wins shy of a national title. They closed out the fall season with a 12-2 record and will be strong candidates for a national ranking when the ITA releases its next set up ranking this January.
The Shockers are off until Jan. 16 when they open up the spring season with a dual match against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Tulsa, Okla. WSU's first home action comes Jan. 30 against Creighton.
