MBB: VanVleet Leads WSU to 75-55 Win Over Tulsa

Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. – Fred VanVleet dished out nine assists and a game-high 21 points and Ron Baker knocked down a career-high six three-pointers to lead No. 9 Wichita State to a 75-55 victory over Tulsa Saturday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena, Home of Devlin Court.

WSU (4-0) broke open a tie-game at the 13:18 mark with a 22-4 run to take a 40-22 lead into the half. Tulsa (3-3) missed 16-of-17 shots during the cold spell.

The Shockers opened the second half with five straight points to push their lead to 23, and the hosts cruised from there.

WSU extended its national-best regular season winning streak to 35 games and posted its seventh consecutive victory over Tulsa - the longest by a Shocker team in the series' 84-year history.

Something about Tulsa brings out the best in Baker, who hit 6-of-11 from deep on Saturday. He had five treys in the 2013 meeting.

VanVleet went 6-for-11 with a pair of threes and knocked down seven of 10 free throw attempts. In addition to his nine assists (one shy of his career best), VanVleet also played 32 minutes without a turnover.

Darius Carter contributed 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, despite playing only 18 minutes, and Tekele Cotton posted a team-high seven rebounds to go with six points.

WSU outrbounded its fourth straight opponent, besting Tulsa on the boards 39-27.

The Hurricane hit 8-of-16 threes, shot 56 percent in the second half and only turned the ball over 10 times - but it wasn't nearly enough.

The Shockers finished with only six turnovers and shot 46.2 percent as a team from three-point range (12-of-26).

Offenses ruled the first seven minutes of the game, with the team combining to knock down nine treys in their first 11 attempts.

Wichita State connected on three-straight threes from three different Shockers (Wessel, Baker and Cotton) to regain the lead, 21-18 with 12:59 left in the first half. Tulsa hit a drought over the next four minutes, going 0-for-8 as Wichita State took advantage, going on an 8-0 run and extending the lead, 26-18 at the 7:53 minute mark.

The Golden Hurricane would only score four more points in the half as the Shockers went on a 14-4 run in the final seven minutes to take a 40-22 lead after the first 20 minutes. VanVleet led Wichita State with eight points in that stretch, finishing the first half with 11 points and five assists.

Baker led the Shockers at the half with 12 points off of 4-of-7 shooting from three-point range, while Wright led the Golden Hurricane with 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc. Wichita State shot 48 percent (14-of-29) from the field and 50 percent (8-of-16) from three-point range in the first 20 minutes, while Tulsa went into the half shooting 27 percent (7-of-26) from the field and 50 percent (4-of-8) from beyond the arc.

The Shockers kept the momentum going in the second half, going on a 5-0 run in the first two minutes backed by a layup from VanVleet and a three from Baker to give Wichita State a 45-22 advantage. Tulsa would respond with a 15-2 run to cut the Wichita State lead, 47-37 at the 11:08 mark.

A Baker three at the 10:41 mark sparked a 9-4 run to give the Shockers a 56-41 lead but the Golden Hurricane would not give up, connecting on six-straight shots to stay in the game. Woodard kept Tulsa alive with two-straight three-pointers and a jumper, but VanVleet responded with a three of his own and an alley-oop to Shaq Morris, giving the Shockers a 69-52 lead with 4:17 left in the game.

The Golden Hurricane rallied until the very end but it was not enough as the Shockers won their fifth game of the season and 35th-consecutive regular season win with a 75-55 victory over Tulsa. Wichita State finished the game shooting 46 percent on 25-of-54 shooting, outrebounding Tulsa 39-27 and ended with 18 assists, five steals and forced 10 turnovers in the contest. Tulsa shot 41 percent (21-of-51) from the field, 50 percent (8-of-16) from three-point range and had two blocked shots in the game.

The Shockers will travel to play Utah on Wednesday, Dec. 3 to take on the Runnin' Utes at 10 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.

NOTES:

- The victory improved WSU to 4-0 for the third straight season and also gave the Shockers' their third consecutive unbeaten November.

--Baker moved into 17th place on WSU's all-time three-pointers list. His 110 treys are just three behind former teammate Cleanthony Early (2012-14) and four behind PJ Couisnard (2004-08)… Baker reached 100 threes faster than any player in school history, hitting No. 100 against Memphis in his 56th career game… He needs 20 more threes to crack WSU's all-time top 10.

-VanVleet's nine-assist day helped him leap Jason Perez, KC Hunt and Clevin Hannah for 12th on the school's career assists list. The junior All-American also ranks eighth on the all-time steals list.
