WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State women's basketball has signed student-athletes Jyar Francis, Ellie Lehne and Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage to National Letters of Intent, head coach Jody Adams announced today.
Jyar (JY-are) Francis, a 6-foot-0 forward from Ponchatoula High School, who resides in Hammond, Louisiana, averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds as a junior. A multi-sport athlete, she earned first-team all-district, District MVP, and All-State honors. During her freshman season, she played volleyball, softball and competed in track and field. She has plans to throw the shot and discus as a senior after basketball season. She also plays for the Louisiana Lady Select AAU team.
“Jyar is a natural when it comes to the game,” Adams said. “She has a great IQ and makes reads you don't teach. She has that natural feel that is similar to a Chynna Turner in size and strength, but her skill set allows her to connect from the three, score around the rim, pass like a guard and bang with the best of them defensively.”
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage, a 6-foot-1 forward from Santa Fe, New Mexico, averaged 13.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 blocks a game as a junior, helping her team to a No. 1-ranking in Class 4A. She has played for the New Mexico Select team since seventh grade.
“Sabrina is a natural, physical, strong, very athletic and powerful player,” Adams said. “She is very versatile in her skill set, which will allow her to play like a guard in a 6-foot frame in the four and five positions in our system. She will be a great fit in our style of play and in the tempo we need to keep.”
Ellie Lehne (Lenny), a 6-foot-2 forward from Byron High School in Byron, Ill., was named second-team AP All-State, second-team IBCA All-State and Big North All-Conference and scored more than 850 points as a sophomore and junior. She also helped her team to a 30-3 record as sectional champions as a junior. Lehne plays for the Midwest Wildcats in AAU basketball.
“Ellie is a long athlete that reminds me a lot of Kelsey Jacobs,” Adams said. “She has a great work ethic and is a very driven competitor. I see her in the near future flexing in our system from a four out to a three because of her ability to knock down the trey. She has a great motor, and high IQ for the game.”
