Lisa Hodgson is the fifth women's basketball player to be inducted into the Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame. At the end of her career she was second in scoring (1,424), fifth in scoring average (12.7), fourth in shooting percentage (47 percent), third in assists (251), third in steals (131) and fourth in games played (112). She is still seventh in scoring, second in field goals made, 16th in assists, and 18th in steals in Wichita State record book. In 1982-83, she scored 469 points, which ranked second at the end of her career, and still ranks as the sixth best by a Shocker.
“I was a little surprised,” Hodgson said of being inducted. “But it's a great honor and I absolutely loved being a Shocker.”
While she acknowledges that being inducted into the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame is a great personal honor, just like anything else in her life, it also has a family appeal for Hodgson. Her father, Bob Hodgson, played basketball at Wichita State from 1953-56, where as a senior he averaged a double-double, leading the team in scoring (17.5) and rebounding (11.5). His efforts as a Shocker earned him induction into the hall of fame in 2002.
“I think he showed more excitement about me being inducted about it than I did. His exact words were, 'I think my head is so big, that I am not going to be able to get out the door.'”
Just like any collegiate athlete, Hodgson remembers all the fun road trips and good times she had with her teammates, but one of her favorite memories of her time at Wichita State was with another Shocker Sports Hall of Famer.
“One of my highlights of my career was when the men's basketball team would let me play with them every once in awhile and I threw an alley-oop to Xavier McDaniel. Every time I tell that story to someone it gives me goose bumps.”
Most of all, Hodgson enjoyed the family atmosphere that playing basketball at Wichita State brought.
“When you're a team it is kind of like you're family. There are those amazing moments and not so amazing moments, but the camaraderie of that family and when you come together in a big game and make it all work is one of the greatest feelings you could ever have.”
Throughout her life, family has always been a common theme for Hodgson. It was the main reason she decided to come to play basketball at Wichita State in the first place. For some 18-year olds, following in your parents' footsteps is not always an easy thing to do. Hodgson was able to embrace her dad's past as a Shocker, and now she will join him in the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame.
